Final Fantasy XI’s Final Expansion Announced

March 19th, 2015 by Tony Garsow

Early this morning at a press conference in Japan, Square Enix announced that a new expansion for Final Fantasy XI will arrive in May 2015. It’ll be the final expansion for the game arriving as a series of updates called the Rhapsodies of Vana’diel, with three updates scheduled for May, August, and November 2015. Support for PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 will end in March 2016, Windows PC support will continue.

Square Enix also used the opportunity to announce a free-to-play smartphone RPG for Japan called Final Fantasy Grandmasters — a game based in the world of Vana’diel. Also, Square Enix is partnering with Nexon for a smartphone client of Final Fantasy XI. The service is planned for 2016 worldwide.

To clarify, Final Fantasy Grandmasters, will probably not make it to America.

Like that is a surprise for FF fans. Hardly any FF mobile game makes it to the States, let alone Europe.

Man I remember getting this game at launch in 2002. I believe I was 16 at the time and had just built a pretty decent PC and was playing with all my friends. It was such a fun time. I only played it for about 2 years and then we all switched to WoW but I thought it was amazing to play an online FF and that’s why I also really enjoy XIV.
