Topic du Jour: What justifies a spin-off title?

August 20th, 2010 by Tony Garsow

Final Fantasy is a series that’s known for spin-offs and side stories apart from its main series. Even back in the days of the Gameboy, Square realized the franchise power of the Final Fantasy name. Some Final Fantasy spin-offs are met with acclaim, and others are balked at, with a varying degree of sentiments in-between. These titles extend the franchise nearly as much as the main series, and are a great source of revenue from a fanbase especially with the production costs of HD-console videogames rising to new heights. So we want to hear from you on your opinions on what justifies a spin-off. Take a look at the three prompts below and feel free to respond below in our comments or (preferably) on the discussion thread in our forum.

  1. What standards of gameplay and presentation must be met in order for a spin-off to be considered quality? Which Final Fantasy spinoffs have achieved this? Which haven’t? (Please be specific in your reasoning.)
  2. In developing a spin-off, how important is it to capture the attention of fans of the original game or franchise versus kindling new interest from people who may not have been aware or have played a Final Fantasy?
  3. For the sake of an example: you’re put in charge of creating a spin-off for Final Fantasy XIII. How do you strike a balance between pleasing the fans of the original, re-attracting those who did not like the original, and incorporating your own creative ideas?

As usual we’ve had great answers from our forum members, and we can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this topic! Thanks!
