Square-Enix recruiting for new PDD1 project

December 3rd, 2011 by Tony Garsow

Square-Enix is hiring. Big whoop, right? Well, the details reveal that Square-Enix is developing a new game in their 1st Production Department for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. PDD1 (as some, namely me, call them) is Square-Enix’s flagship team that works on mainline Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games.

This new project will use the Unity engine, and developers are being sought for the game’s planning stages. Specifics of what the positions entail include designing with a 3D world, developing RPG mechanics like a job and ability growth system as well as inns and airship travel. The game will be an action RPG.

A project pops into mind here, and that is a sequel to Final Fantasy Type-0, as the developers have openly admitted that they’d like to turn into a sub-franchise. Thoughts?

    This is definitely FF Type-1. No doubt about it.

    Also, 1st Production Department are not the only team that make main series FF games. They made FFVII, FFVIII, FFX, FFX-2, FFXIII, FFXIII-2, FF Versus XIII. FFXI and FFXIV are made by Product Development Division 3, while FFT and FFXII were made by Product Development Division 4.

    @SQEX_Me

    Yes, I’m aware of the other divisions, but thanks for sharing as I find people have trouble understanding or don’t know what divisions at Square-Enix make what. :>

    @Tony

    No problem, bro. I personally see people whine on news comments about Versus XIII and FFXIII-2 that SQEX are taking too long and that they will never get FFXV out this gen. The thing is, there are at least 4 other large scale internal teams a SQEX and one could already be making FFXV as I type this. In fact, make that 5 due to that new Unreal Engine 3 Action RPG hiring a new team of staff to make it.

    The thing is, a lot of the top-level talent at Square-Enix is notably absent. Who would direct XV? Toriyama is a bit unlikely, Tabata will probably have his hands full with the Type sub-series. Tanaka/Yoshida will have FFXI/XIV to worry about. Nomura is on Versus duty and will do Kingdom Hearts from then on…

    The only one who isn’t busy is Akitoshi Kawazu. (I don’t think Emperors SaGa is consuming all of his time.)

    @Tony

    You make a strong point. Is that everyone covered, though? What about the person who directed FFVI, FFIX and FFXII? I can’t remember his name, but I know for sure that FFVI, FFIX and FFXII were not made by any of the people you just listed. Matsuno co-directed FFXII with this person before he left the project.

    I’m not sure if this person has left the company but if they haven’t then that’s another staff member seemingly doing nothing. He could well be making FFXV given his track record, IMO.

    @SQEX_Me

    Hiroyuki Itou has been hidden for quite a while. Erren at Nova Crystallis asked Square-Enix about him and he’s still with the company… doing something.

  • SQEX_Me

    Thanks for telling me his name. So he’s still with the company? I’m pretty sure he hasn’t worked on anything since FFXII Zodiac Job System came out in 2007. He’s likely our FFXV director then.

    There’s no way you can be employed by a company and not have worked on game since 2007 unless you were really busy working on a large scale project. FFXII took 5 years to make, so he’s likely been working on FFXV since then.

    We’ll have to wait and see. However, if he is working on FFXV then I wouldn’t be surprised if Kitase’s team goes on to make a FFXIII-3.

    they need to beg Hironobu Sakaguchi to come back to SE!! really all of these new FF(not including type-0-best FF yet) are not what they used to be.
