Final Fantasy Explorers Announced for 3DS

June 11th, 2014 by Tony Garsow

The newest issue of Jump reveals a brand new Final Fantasy action-RPG for the Nintendo 3DS: Final Fantasy Explorers. In this multiplayer-focused game your goal is to obtain the legendary crystals, and you’ll be up against classic Final Fantasy monsters like Ifrit seen in the scan below. Some of the jobs available are Knight, Monk, White Mage, and Black Mage — but that’s not all that’s available!

Stay tuned for more details on Final Fantasy Explorers as it develops!

I’m glad they’re developing something for the 3DS. It’s an extremely popular system, and I was afraid there was still some kind of schism between Square Enix and Nintendo, given the rarity of new games by them for Nintendo consoles. And this game looks interesting: fighting iconic summons using classic jobs to find crystals. A wonderful blend of nostalga and an oppertunity for new ideas and concepts. Go, Square Enix! You’re on a role recently with pressing my smiling buttons.

Gives me a Crystal Chronicles vibe! I’m down!

Something for 3DS besides Theatrhythm at least. Let’s hope this gets localized (I’m sure it will).

The bad outcome of this will be that it’s effectively a generic thing where there’s no story or characters, basic gameplay and just the good old Job system wheeled out lazily for the upteenth time rather than anything more fresh or original like the systems in FFVI, VII and VIII.

The good outcome of this is that it’ll be an open world game that’s basically like Monster Hunter with FF elements; FF has already had vague elements of that with the various loot drops = new items at shops, a la FFXII, and the upgrade system in FFXIII. Making a full-blown crafting thing to really encourage players to team up and take on the various enemies would be very cool indeed. If it’s the former, it just feels like I may as well just play FFIII again. Either way, I’ll still enjoy a reason to get my 3DS out for the first time in almost a year.
