Oerba Dia Vanille will return in the third and final installment of the Final Fantasy XIII series: Lightning Returns. Revealed by this week’s issue of Jump, Vanille can be seen in a new outfit, with some sort of ceremonial headdress. Many remember her fate in Final Fantasy XIII: sealed in the crystal pillar that prevented Cocoon from crashing into Pulse. Well, it seems both Fang and Vanille have awoken from their crystal stasis.
Vanille will be found as Lightning progresses the story in Luxerion, the “City of Light”. Here, the people piously live out their days until the end of the world. To the Salvation Council that presides in the city, Vanille is a saint — someone who can hear the voices of the dead that have passed on before them.
Not everyone in Luxerion embraces the Savior’s (Lightning) arrival. In the slum district of town, the Children of Etro gather in the Warren. This cult-like group garb themselves in white and have been responsible for the murders of several pink-haired women that resemble Lightning. In one cutscene, they hang an effigy of Lightning from the train station tower, likely intended to intimidate the people of Luxerion or the Savior herself. In Luxerion you’ll spend munch of your time investigating the murders carried out by the Children of Etro.
A service called “Outerworld” will be available to players to share battle scores, screenshots, and messages through popular social media outlets.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will release on November 21st in Japan, February 11th in North America, and February 14th in Europe. Available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, PlayStation Network users will be able to download a digital version at release.
