Lightning Returns: FFXIII Screenshot Update

March 21st, 2013 by Tony Garsow

designs

More screenshots from the latest media cycle for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII have surfaced from Famitsu — showing more of our heroine’s travels through the Dead Dunes. In this waste, Lightning will encounter bands of theives that will set out to plunder the many ruins that dot the landscape for relics. One relic, of holy repute, will catch the eye of Lightning. She is seen below talking with a bandit. It appears they know quite a bit about her, especially their chief. Famitsu asks: “Are you ready to go treasure hunting?”

Before setting out on quests to scour the desert herself, Lightning will be able to restock and recharge in town. She’ll be able to do this by resting at an inn or getting a bite to eat at a restaurant. The spendier the food, the more Lightning will recover — but at the cost of your hard earned gil. Menu items include “Baguette” and “Gyshal Salad”. Of course, you’ll still be able to heal up by finding potions in treasure boxes and battle spoils.

She’ll need her wits about her as she travels through the dangerous desert, as there are fearsome enemies that lie in wait — even below the sands. Lightning will need to parry the monster’s charge to launch her counterattack. Lightning can use the power of Lightspeed to slow down time to tip the scales in her favor. Lightning can deftly strike her foes, as well as nimbly dodge their powerful attacks. Lightspeed will consume EP (Energy Points), a resource that will dwindle over Lightning’s journey. Use it wisely!

If you’re really in trouble, make use of the sand dunes by sliding down them to quickly escape enemies in the field!

    Oooh, where did you see the the thing about inns? I haven’t gotten much in the way of translations yet.

  • Ehren Rivers

    Nevermind, I just got there! Hahaha.

  • Tony Garsow

    @Ehren
    Yeah, there’s a bit in Fami’s caption. Grats on the NC gig, btw!

  • Ehren Rivers

    Heh, yep I got it~ And thanks! Speaking of that, I was actually wondering if there might be somewhere else I could get ahold of you. There are some things I’d like to discuss with someone regarding this game, and I’d rather not bother Erren with them because of how busy she is.

    Oh and that shop screenshot, the one at the North Station, that looks a little bit bigger-sized than the one I found on the English website. Does it look a little wider to you?

  • alexsam

    Finally! Inns are back! Btw, I read that apparently that guy she’s talking to is someone that has appeared in a previous FF XIII. I wonder who he is…

  • Ehren Rivers

    @Alexsam: According to the translation I’ve been given (which is not an official English translation) the guy she’s talking to isn’t actually the leader of the Thieve’s Guild. It’s just a member of the Guild that seems to act as though the leader knows her. It’s possible that Tony’s translation is more accurate though!

  • Tony Garsow

    @Ehren
    My contact info is on our staff page. Also I can poke Erren for you. ;p

  • Tony Garsow

    So, in regard to the items on the restaurant menu:

    – shiro baketto (White [Bread] Baguette)
    – gisaru no sarada (Gysahl Salad)
    – fon-do-behī (Fon-Do-Behī/Fondue Behī)

    Perhaps “Behīmosu/Behemoth Fondue”?

  • alexsam

    @Ehren Rivers you’re right. I misread the translation. The guy in the pic is a member of the thieve’s guild, but it’s the leader that has actually reappeared. I thought it was strange…

    @Tony Garsow Behemoth fondue??? what is it with this trilogy and behemoth cuisine? I remember Noel saying he was gonna cook one for Yuel’s bday… sick.

  • Tony Garsow

    I vaguely remember a few instances where Behīmosu (Behemoth) was kind of nicknamed/shortened to Behī in FF before. So that’s my guess. You’re welcome to give it a go. ;P

  • AnimaMagna

    Looks nice, though I hope they put a little more detail into Bhunivelze before release. Even our own moon never looks like a cardboard cutout. And I wonder who that man talking to her is? And…where have they met before, if they have?

  • Tony Garsow

    Looks like it’s “Behemoth Stew” as per the new (French) screenshots. :)

  • Seyra

    Maybe that blond guy is Maqui from the former Team of Snow: Lebreau, Gadot, Maqui ^^;

    How did he survived all these years? Imagination boat here I come =)

  • Seyra

    Ok reading the French screenshots, it’s not Maqui.

  • alexsam

    All these screenshots that have come out this week look great! Amazing visuals! And they just keep updating all the time! It looks as though they’re doing a great job in the graphics department, since this (to me at least) looks better than what we saw in XIII-2! I’m also really liking the whole monorail concept!

    @Tony Garsow Yes indeed you were right. It looks like they actually enjoy that stuff but I think I’ll pass… 😛

  • Tony Garsow

    Also, in regards to inns, I’ve edited a caption to one of the images above that reads “Do you want a room?” So yeah, there’s inns. ;p

  • Tony Garsow

    English versions added!

  • Seyra

    As long as the Bandits Chief is not Sahz I’m ok ^^ Would be nice if it were one of the Lebreau gang.

  • AnimaMagna

    What the.. That innkeeper. It’s that casino master from the Sazh DLC episode.

  • LOL-san

    I love this!!

  • Alex

    My bet is that Snow is the bandit leader, given that he and Hope are the only ones with leadership experience and Hope isn’t really the “bandit” type.
    Also, how are there ancient ruins in Nova Chrysalia if the place itself is only like 500 years old?

  • AnimaMagna

    @Alex
    Chaos seems to have pooled all of time into Nova Crysallia, so ancient ruins might be from several thousand years in Gran Pulse’s future, but here they are on a newly born world. And I heard on Nova Crystallis website that the Spanish version of the Lightning-Bandit screenshot there before indicates the leader is a woman. I did a test on Google Translate and it looks right: the word ‘nuestra lider’ (used in the screenshot) roughly translates as ‘our female leader’ (nuestra is the word ‘our’ with an inbuilt feminine connotation).

  • Ehren Rivers

    Yup, I did some by-hand translation and was confused, so I had a Spanish-speaking friend take a look at it. Definitely says “Our leader”, but ‘nuestra’ as opposed to ‘nuestro’ means the subject of ‘our’ (In this case, the leader) is a woman.

    Sooooo, my money is on Fang at the moment.

    As for the ruins, what AnimaMagna said. The entire history of Gran Pulse got thrown into a jumbled world fused with Valhalla, one that was constantly shifting and being warped by Chaos. Where any given ruin or building is from is anybody’s guess! Even bearing that in mind though, any building that came into Nova Chrysalia at 500AF when the end of time occurred would now technically be ancient by this point. Remember that the average person in this world doesn’t realize 500 years have passed!

  • lalik

    So I don’t know if it’s confirmed already but since Inn is back, does that means that your life don’t recover to 100% after every fight now?

  • Tony Garsow

    I think that’s a likely assumption.

  • alexsam

    Actually, I don’t know why, but I like the concept of having to heal after battle. It really didn’t make sense fighting all the time and automatically recovering. It just meant that u were ready for the next fight. This makes room for some strategy -can u afford to take on the next enemy or do u have to heal first? do u have enough potions? u know, old school stuff. I like it!

    As for the bandit leader, if she’s a female, maybe it’s that Lumina chick that’s said to play tricks on Lightning all the time. The ruins could be of any city, but if I had to guess, I’d say this is either Oerba or the Yaschas Massif (that big structure reminds me of something we saw back in XIII).

  • lalik

    Yeah I actually do like the idea of having to heal better too. I mean it certainly is a classic in JRPG to have to heal after a fight.

  • Shadowcatdoll09

    I just hope Lighting has more special attacks than just Army of One/Legion of One.

  • Trent

    well now we know weres snow gonna be in the dunes acting as bandit cheif
