Lightning Returns Detailed at PlayStation Event

July 26th, 2013 by Tony Garsow

At a PlayStation event in Tokyo today, the staff behind Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII were present to show off a playable demo to fans and announce some new details for the trilogy’s finale due out late this year in Japan.

It seems that Vanille will be reappearing in Lightning Returns, just like her Pulsian friend Fang, thought he circumstances behind their several-hundred year absence are still unknown. So is the reason why Hope Estheim resembles his younger Final Fantasy XIII self despite the passage of time. What we do know is that the third area to be revealed, the Wildlands, was shown to the audience and that you’ll be able to ride a chocobo through its expanse. We saw an early build of the Wildlands briefly in January, a more wooded area of the region we see momentarily in the newest trailer.

The collaborative costumes with other Final Fantasy titles will have their own unique victory pose, such as the Miqo’te costume (Final Fantasy XIV) and Cloud’s SOLDIER outfit (Final Fantasy VII). You’ll be able to customize the colors of these outfits as well, and the team showed off some different color variants of the SOLDIER outfit. Another crossover outfit set for the game is Yuna’s summoner garb (Final Fantasy X), which will likely feature her victory pose from her respective game. Those of you who have save data from Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be able to unlock the outfits Lightning wears in them automatically.

On a rather random note director Motomu Toriyama adjusted the size of Lightning’s bust for the game, but depending on the style of the outfit you load into your Schema, Lightning’s bust size will change.

Equipment Lightning amasses through her journey can be purchased in shops or obtained by completing various quests, and abilities have the potential of being “dropped” by enemies when defeated. Accessories will come in various types, such as necklaces, earrings, and glasses. By equipping the right Schema, you can exploit enemy weaknesses in combat through the Stagger Wave system — and the team mentioned that by using the optimal setup, the game’s final boss can be defeated in under fifty seconds. While that may seem like a pushover challenge, you’ll probably need to know the details before you attempt a record fight.

Players less inclined towards the action-elements of Lightning Returns won’t be left hung out to dry — by stacking defensive parameters where applicable, you’ll be able to rely less on timing “Guard” and “Evade” abilities.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII releases in Japan on November 21st, North America on February 11th, and Europe on February 14th.

I also heard from another site that Lightning, Hope and Snow have grown emotionally distant or cold. ALso, I hope Vanille doesn’t end up being part of the rebel cult who want’s Lightning dead. That wouldn’t be like her at all.

@AnimaMagna With the chaos inflicting everyone, you don’t know how things may turn out. There’s some things I’ve been reading that I don’t get. First, Snow only refers to Light as “Savior” and not Sis or Light or whatever he used to call her. Second, this Lumina character does call Lightning Sis. And third, apparently something happened to Hope about 167 years before Light shows up that makes him revert to his child-like form, but he has no memory of it. Seriously, what’s going on in this game?? Btw, I like how you can play around with the old costumes. Especially the SOLDIER outfit looks good with white shirt!

Yay, glad they have her ff13 costume.

“unlock the outfits Lightning wears in them automatically” That makes me think that players might be able to unlock them using the save data, or get them as bonus costumes at of a 100% playthrough. Of course, that could just be me reading things that aren’t there. On a side-note, that Yuna outfit looks cool, though seeing her bow and smile like that was a shock.

After reading a few more things about this game, I think there’s another title that’s more appropriate for it: Noah’s Ark.

    DEM YUNA DRESS SCREEN SHOTS!

I need to see how she fights, i hope she can summon the FFX Aeons in real time, like Yuna does in Dissidia 012!

    SO MUCH HYPE!

There shall be no realtime summoning … well Aeons anyways. There MAY be eidolins…
