Assembling Lightning’s Perfect Schema

February 14th, 2014 by Tony Garsow

Today marks the launch of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII in Europe, completing the game’s worldwide circuit of releases in major regions. Players from around the globe are digging into the game’s battle system and hefty customization options — so we thought we’d use this as an opportunity for you to share with us your discoveries experimenting with Schema.

In Lightning Returns, a Schema is a loadout of customizable Garb, Equipment, and Abilities. You’ll be able to create three different Schema for use in combat and change between them whenever the situation calls for it. Enemies in Lightning Returns can be quite tough if you don’t have the right setup to exploit their Stagger Conditions, which when met, will provide the opportunity to deal damage more expediently. Surviving, and ultimately mastering certain enemy encounters will prove abundantly useful in maintaining your precious Energy Points — thereby increasing the time you’ll have available to you each day.

With that in mind, it’s important to create a well-balanced triumvirate of roles that can adapt to different situations. While it may be tempting to load up Lightning with many different elemental magic spells, you may want to opt for a few tailored to best exploit an enemy’s Stagger Conditions. Debuffs such as Deprotect, Deshell, and Imperil go a long way in Lightning Returns, and there was rarely a battle I faced without at least one or two.

Experimenting with the myriad effects of passive abilities on your equipment and skills goes along way, and should you complete the game and unlock Hard Mode, you’ll be able to boost the parameters of said passives to greater effect.

In the screenshot below you can see I’ve combined the Dragoon garb with the Gagnrand weapon. Beforehand using Mediguard in battle would allow me to slowly recover HP though staying on defense and consuming ATB quickly. By experimenting with different traits, I was able to use the Gagnrand’s ability to hit an enemy twice on one command. Combine that with the Dragoon’s Lancet ability, which siphons HP with every hit, I discovered a new strategy where I was able to recover boatloads of health while staying on the offensive — which made a world of difference.
