This section is not possible without his | | help. | |______________________________________________________________| ------------------------------------------------------------------------ About the Guardian Force Guardian Forces are very important in the game as they can done devastating damage to your enemies. They are similar to the summons of FF7 and FFT. Summoning a GF will resulting a blue ATB covering the character's ATB (ATB stands for Active Time Bar). Also, the stats of the GF will be overlapping the character's stats. Guardian Forces' HP can be recovered while staying in Hotels (such as Balamb Hotel)/Dormitory. You can also make use of GF recovering items such as G-Returner and Pet Houses, which can be bought from GF Pet Shops. However, in FF8, Guardians Forces do not only allows you to have an edge in combat, they also help in boosting up your characters' ability through the Junction Menu. Your characters can become stronger through the Junction by junction magic to boost up their abilities/attributes. Each GFs has 22 Abilities and some of them need to be learn. There are six classes of abilities: Command, GF, Character, Party, Menu and Junction. Learning this abilities requires AP which can be gained by winning battles against BOSSES/monsters. GFs have levels unlike Summons in FF7. You can treat GFs like a character. The higher level the GF is, the more powerful it becomes. To level up, GFs need to gain EXP points. Why GFs is that important? There are a total of 16 GFs (with abilities) and 6 hidden GFs. Without them, your characters have low statistics and HP. They will only possess the Attack ability. You need to junction a GFs to a character in order to have commands. GFs can be gain by using an items, defeating them or drawing them via the Draw command from BOSSES. [refer to Part I, Basic Tutorial for more information] _____ / 1.1 \_________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ About GF Abilities ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This has been tested and proven by me. If your GF has mastered the previous ability such as SumMag +10% (Or it stands for Summon Magic +10%), you will find its prequesite, SumMag +20%, covering an empty slot. Prequesites needed mastered in order to unlock its advance ability. Below is a mini-diagram illustrating about this: {key: "---m--->" stands for "mastered and gain"]} Examples: GF HP +10% ---m---> GF HP +20% ---m--> GF HP +30% SumMag +10% ---m--> SumMag +20% ---m--> SumMag +30% Med Data ---m--> Med LV Up Card ---m--> Card Mod-RF F-Mag-RF ---m--> Ammo-RF But sometimes the advanced ability does not appear in the GF abilities list. The reason is that an empty slot has been occupied with another ability [you can add an ability by using GF items such as Steel Pipe [which allows GFs to learn SumMag +10%]. In the GF abilities list (which will be discussed in further details below), you will find the 22 actual abilities without any modification. Quite confusing, huh? Hence, here is a word of advice, don't use GF items on a GF until the GFs have mastered the "actual" 22 abilities naturally. Once it has mastered all the abilities, you can use Amnesia Greens [an item which can be bought from Pet Shops] to delete an ability (but be careful as once an ability has been deleted, you can't bring it back!). Certain items can't be used for certain cases: If you have a HP-J Scroll [which allows a GF to learn HP-J], you intend to use it on a GF Quezacotl. You can't use it as GF Quezacotl has that ability in its ability list. Get it? _____ / 1.2 \_________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ GF Management ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Always get ALL GFs into battles [It's not necessary to summon them, but make sure that they are along with your characters through Junction to gain EXP]. They can gain HP bonuses and they will inflict more damage when they are at higher levels. 2. Always go after rare skills such as Diablos' Mug [as this ability is pretty handy if you need to get the rare items such as Steel Pipes.] 3. Distribute the GFs evenly to all characters. Make sure everyone has spells junction to basic factors: <> Str-J [affects your character's attacking power] <> Mag-J [affects your character's magic attacking power] <> HP-J [This is basically your character's stats as once it hits zero, your character will be KO'ed] <> Vit-J [This similar to defense, the higher the stats is, the lower damage done by physical attacks. Physical attacks also includes non-magic attacks. Example, Ruby Dragon's Breath and Malboro's Eerie Sound Wave] 4. For those GFs with Boost ability, always get them beforehand of all other GF abilities. It is cheap and can does about 30% ~ 50% more damage. 5. Always check what abilities that you are learning before get into battles. Always pick those high AP skills that require to master before fighting against BOSSES, making full use of it. 6. Use GF recovering items such as G-Potions, G-Mega-Potions to recover lost HP of your GFs. 7. Summon GFs regulary with one specific character. Summoning a GF many times by a character will improve the GF's compatibility with the character. Boost will work at its best in this case. GF compatibility affects the speed of the ATB bar of GF. [The higher the GF compatibility, the faster the GF will be summoned!] 8. For better results of improving GF relationship, use LuvLuv G and GF compatibility items such as Bomb Fragments [improves compability with Ifrit by 1] 9. Don't ever use Amnesia Greens on GF's abilities such as T Mag-RF which cannot be retrieve by using items to learn it again. Don't use GF learning items before the GFs have mastered all the actual 22 GF abilities, otherwise you can't unlock some of the abilities. _____ / 1.3 \_________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Explanation on the GF Screen ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Select the GF option under the main menu and you should see a screen similar to the one stated below in ASCII format. You will see a word "Complete!" once the required AP has been met. You can move your cursor to select the ability with the one that you want to learn. Okay, let's start off with the explanation. After you have chosen [GF] sub-menu, you will see the screen when there are the pictures of your GFs. Now select the picture and you will see a screen similar to the one illustrated above. This screen is known as the "Learn" Screen. Now you will be able to choose the GF ability that you want to master first. Note that if the GF had mastered SumMag +10% (it will unlock its advanced ability) and the GF will now be learning SumMag +20%. Certain abilities such as Card Mod-RF will be available after you have mastered the Card Command. Computer always picks the SumMag +10%. Hence, it will be better if you choose to master Boost ability (which is better, refer to GF Abilities Bestiary for more details) first. Hence, some of your choices may work much better as compared to the computer's choice. Note: All GFs have two slots for character/party abilities except for GFs with Ability x3 or Ability x4. How to equip commands? refer to "Basic Tutorial" section in Part I. You can also find a basic guide typed by Yee Seng Fu (ysf@pacific.net.sg) and it is also found at gamefaqs. You can get more information regarding about the basics of playing FF8. Abilities that are being marked with a "*", are the initial abilities that are unlocked. If you have any doubts which ability will unlock the desired ability, refer to the Ability Learning Tree for more details. [it is just below the list]. Names of GFs or attacks that are marked in brackets and a T are the names that are used for the Japanese version. _____ / 1.4 \_________________________________________________________________ ======================================================================== GFs and Their Locations ======================================================================== Name of GF: Quezacotl [T: Queztacoatl] Summon Attack: Thunder Storm Elemental: Thunder elemental damage against all enemies Getting It: This GF can be gotten in Disc 1. To be more acurate, it is actually one of Quistis' Limit Breaks. _____ / 2.0 \_________________________________________________________________ ======================================================================== List of Abilities ======================================================================== ______________________________________________________________________ | | | | | | No. | Name of Abilities | Symbol | Functions | |______|_______________________|__________|___________________________| | | | | | | 2.1 | Command | (!) | Enable your character to | | | | | use commands such as GF. | |______|_______________________|__________|___________________________| | | | | | | 2.2 | Junction | (J) | Enables you to junction | | | | | magic together with the | | | | | character's stats, thus | | | | | boosting up the stats. | |______|_______________________|__________|___________________________| | | | | | | 2.3 | Guardian Forces | (GF) | Enables you to improve GF | | | | | stats such as GF HP +20% | |______|_______________________|__________|___________________________| | | | | | | 2.4 | Character | (C) | Allows your characters to | | | | | have enhanced abilities. | | | | | Examples include Mug, Str | | | | | +20% and much more. | |______|_______________________|__________|___________________________| | | | | | | 2.5 | Menu | (M) | Allows you to make magic/ | | | | | tools which can be chosen | | | | | Abilities sub-menu. Each character can have the maximum of 4 commands. Certain commands also you to do different things. However the ATTACK command is a must. But it can be replaced if you have gotten Mug. [an ability which allows your character to steal an item and at the same time dealts damage.] All GFs (except for Phoenix, Chicobo, Moomba, MiniMog and Odin) will have mastered the Magic, GF, Item and Draw commands. 2.1.1. Magic Command ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : All except for Odin, Phoenix, Chicobo | | Functions : Allows the equipped character to cast magic during| | battles. When your character has the status | | disorder of Silence, your character will be unable| | use the command. | | AP needed : n/a | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance: This is one of the best commands in the game. It serves as great importance as the command does not only provides offense, but also helps in defense by restoring lost HP. You can cast two/three magics in a single turn only after a Double/Triple spell is being cast on you. But first of all, you have to stock up some magic [by drawing from enemies or Draw Points] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In-depth Explanation of Magic __________ |Attack | After you have select the [MAGIC] from the Command Menu |Magic <|| you will be able to see the number of spells and types |GF | of spells stocked up in the character's Magic Inventory. |Draw | __________________ |__________| --> |Magic P1 NUM| TIP: Always arrange the spells |Fire 100| such as Cure, Aura and | |Fira 45 | Life on the first few | |Blizzard 100| pages. GF Command ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : All except for Odin, Phoenix, Chicobo | | Functions : Allows the equipped character to summon a GF | | during battles. Summoning a GF will causes the ATB| | and the stats of GF to overlap the stats of your | | character. As you summon a GF, the stats will overlap over the character's HP. There, you will see blue ATB Bar [which will stops immediately when the GF is killed or a Silence Spell is being cast on the character] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In-Depth Explanation on GF Command __________ ______________________ |Attack | |GF P1| Just simply select the |Magic | |Quezacotl HP: 457 | command [GF] and choose |GF <|| --> |Shiva HP: 359 | the GF that you wish to |Item | |Ifrit HP: 409 | summon. He/She can't summon a GF which is being junctioned with another character. - The ATB of GF [represented by blue colour] is the indication of the amount of time left for the GF to be summoned. The speed of the ATB depends on the compatibility with the equipped character. - The GF's damage depends on the opposing elementals, level of GF and Summon Attack bonus [SumMag +10% is one of them], and other external factors [such as Boost] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.1.3. Draw Command ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : All except for Odin, Phoenix, Chicobo | | Functions : Allows the equipped character to draw magic from a| | foe during a battle. The character could draw up | | to nine kind of that spell and could use it | | immediately [2nd option] or store for later use [ | | 1st option]. It also could draw hidden GFs such as| | GF Siren. Unable to use the command when the | | character is under the Silence status disorder. | | AP needed : n/a | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance of Draw This is really an important command in FF8. It allows you to draw spells where you can choose to stock them or cast them immediately. You can draw up to 100 kind of a certain spell. The rate of drawing magic depends solemnly on your Mag stats [Edea has strong Mag stats that's why she could draw up to 9 kind of that spell, each time she uses the Draw Command, but you can also improve the Mag stats by using Junction] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In-Depth Explanation of Draw Command _________ |Attack | _________ |Magic | ---> |Fire | _________ TIP: Sometimes, you see |GF | |Thunder<|| --> | Stock | that "Stock" has |Draw <|| |Blizzard | | Cast | been greyed out, |_________| |Cure | |_________| this means that |_________| the character has already 100 kind of that spell. Here is a brief explaination on how the [Draw] system works. First of all you have to select the [DRAW] command and select the monster that you wished to draw from [you can't draw spells from a death monster, which results a miss. Certain characters such as Quistis have weak ability in drawing magic at a weak rate too.]. There you will see the list of spells that you can draw from. Select the spell and you will see the third box. Stock allows you to stock up magic in your inventory [you can only do this if you have less 100 of that kind of spell and sufficient space in the character's inventory]. Cast allows you to draw the spell and cast the spell immediately [however only one quantity at one time.] Note that monsters such as Ruby Dragon, what you have drawn from it, is pretty useless against it. Notes: * You can draw more magic by tapping the Circle button repeatedly while drawing magic. [This is still not confirmed, but it works when you have low Mag stats] * Draw is a vital command in the game and never ever go into a BOSS fight without it as you can draw GFs from it. There are about 6 GFs that can be obtained from this method. Hence take note. To avoid much doubts, below is a short list of GFs Elynole [at Communciation Towers] --> Siren Disc 1 Iguions [at the President's Mansion] --> Carbuncle Disc 1 NORG [basement of Balamb Garden] --> Leviathan Disc 2 Fujin [at Balamb Hotel] --> Pandemona Disc 2 Edea [At the Auditorium of Galbadia Garden] --> Alexander Disc 2 Ultima Weapon [at Deep Sea Deposit] --> Eden Disc 3-4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.1.4. Item Command ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : All except for Odin, Phoenix, Chicobo | | Functions : Allows the equipped character to use items for | | healing and restore lost Life. Also allows you to | | summon the Phoenix, Moomba and Chicobo. It is | | important and a bit useful in game or if the | | character has been silenced during battles. | | AP needed : n/a | |_____________________________________________________________________| Comments One of the basic fundamentals in the FF series. This command allows you to use items, which can help to restore status ailments, give supporting aid, cast magic [via Stones] and most importantly, restore HP. This command allows you to use MEDICINE and BATTLE ITEMS. This command is still usable even if the character is being silenced. You can have up to the maximum no. of 10 pages. The system of using item is similar to the Magic command. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.1.5. Card Command ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Quezacotl | | Functions : Allows you to "card" a wounded monster. This | | command happens to miss very often and it will | | take quite a long time. Note that not all enemies | | can be carded by the command [example: Fujin] | | You can only do this when the HP of the monster is| | running low. | | AP needed : 40 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance: It is rather a good command if you are running out of that particular cards. For easy usage on carding monsters, cast Demi to reduces the HP of the monster and then used the card command. However, it practically takes ages for you to card a strong foe such as the Ruby Dragon. This command is still usable even if the character is silenced. But it doesn't mean you can't get BOSS cards! You can also get BOSS cards as stated in the card list, you will find names of the monsters, along with some of the BOSS names. You can get two different types of cards from some of the monsters. As for rare cards, you need to play or quest to get them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.1.6. Doom Command [T: Death Sentence Command] ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Shiva | | Functions : Allows you to cause the Instant Death status. You | | see a counter on the top of the enemies. Once the | | counter reachers zero, the monster will be killed | | instantly, very ineffective against BOSSES. | | Description : You will see a Devil appearing and spins its staff| | and you will see a countdown of 24 seconds. When | | the counter reaches zero, the spirit of the | | monster leaves its body. | | AP needed : 60 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance: One great command against high HP foes such as the T-Rexaur. Just simply use the command on the monster and you will see a counter appears at the top of the monster. When the counter hits zero, the monster will be instantly killed. To make the best out of it, cast Blind or have the 100x Blind junctioned to ST-Atk-J so that monster misses its attack. All you do is to wait. This command is still usable even if the character is being silenced. But the downside of it, is that it is a waste of time... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.1.7. Mad Rush [T: Rush Command] ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Ifrit, Eden | | Functions : Causes the character to have the Berserk, Haste | | Shell and Protect status on ALL characters. You | | will lose control your characters. | | AP needed : 60 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance Use this when the monster is low on HP. Your party will just keep on attack until his/her HP drop to zero. [It is just like Lucky 7's status of FF7, except it does not do 9999 HP damage each time..] This command effects all characters. So it is inadvisble to use this on high HP bosses such as the Ruby Dragons. ALL party members will be affected even they have 100x Berserk junctioned to ST-Def-J. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.1.8. Treatment [T: Chiryou Command] ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Siren | | Functions : This command is pretty useful as it will remove | | all status aliments from that character. I doubted| | only the negative ones, such as Silence. You will | | definitely need this for fighting monsters which | | relies on status disorder such as Malboros and | | Tri-Faces. | | AP needed : 100 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance of Treatment Commnad This command works like casting an Esuna spell or using a Remedy. This command is great as it is STILL usable even the character is being silenced. It will remove any forms of status ailments [negative ones only]. However the character can't use this command if he/she is under the following status ailments: Berserk, Sleep, Stop, Petrify and Confuse. It is really a good ability. Try to get it, after you have acquired Boost for GF Siren. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.1.9. Defend ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Brothers, Cactuar | | Functions : Allows the equipped character to defend attacks | | thus reducing damage from offensive monsters such | | as the T-Rexaur. | | AP needed : 100 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance of Defend command I guess it is really bad as Squaresoft does not allow characters to have the Defend commnd without equip anything. This command will works well against monsters that solemnly depends on physical damage [one good example is the T-Rexaur]. This command is quite good as it works like the Protect [however only for that particular turn only]. It is much better if the character could escape than withstand attacks from his/her opponents. The command could effect until the end of the battle, unless you changes the command of that particular character. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.1.10. Darkside [T: Ankoku Command] ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Diablos, Doomtrain, Eden | | Functions : This command is rather risky some HP and thus doing| | more damage using physical attacks. Use this when | | the enemy's HP is running low. It's rather risky. | | AP needed : 100 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance of Darkside Hmm.. this is a risky one. This command sacrifices some HP resulting the character inflict 3 times more damage than an ordinary attack. This is quite good when being used properly. Using this command on dying monsters, could result easy victories. It is still usable even if the character is being silenced. I myself quite like this command. For character's whose Str is about 230+, the character could do 9999 HP damage with this command and loses about 1/20 of his/her HP! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.1.11. Recover [T: Recovery Command] ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Leviathan | | Functions : Restores all your HP during the battle. Very | | useful when fighting against BOSS. It's rather | | costly as it need high AP | | AP needed : 200 AP. | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance of Recover A lot of FF8 players think that this is one of the best GF command abilities. This results restoring HP fully to one character, and it works like Full-cure except it only applies to a character. A great command for killing undead. Does 9999 HP to undead creatures if the HP of the monster exceeds 9999. Instant killer weapon against Zombies. Do NOT use this when Zombie is being cast on the character. Serves well for offense and support, by restoring lost HP. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.1.12. Absorb ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Pandemona, Doomtrain | | Functions : Drain off some HP from one foe. This ability isn't | | that good against low HP monsters. But it drains a | | massive amount of HP from high HP monsters such as | | the T-Rexaur. | | AP needed : 100 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance of Absorb Your character will just drain some HP from the monster, and it is based on Mag stats, does about 300+ to weak monsters and over 1000 against high HP monsters. Quite a good command if you are lack of Potions and healing magic. Usable even if the character is under the Silence status. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.1.13. Revive [T: Sosei Command] ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Alexander | | Functions : One of the best abilities, It revives a dead party | | member and restores fully the KO'd character's HP. | | This has same purpose of Full-life magic. | | AP needed : 200 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance of Revive This can also be an instant killing weapon against undeed. Generally, this is much preferred over Item command in thus of remove KO. As you just need to select the command and choose the character to revive and saves trouble to search through the item pages for the Phoenix Down. But it can be quite useless at sometime... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.1.14. Kamikaze [T: Self-Explosion] ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Cactuar | | Functions : At last, I have used this...but resulting a death | | of a party member. The character, who uses the | | command, will just rushes forward and followed by | | an explosion! Doing 30,000+ HP damage! The | | character will disappear and you can't use the | | character anymore for that particular battle. If | | you check the menu, you see that the character's | | HP has dropped to zero! | | AP needed : 100 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance/Downside of Kamikaze This is a very risky move! It is extremely dangerous if you have sacrifice your best character and have run out of stock for your Life spells and Phoenix Down. But there is one good point, it can lead to a deadly attack against strong HP monsters such as the T-Rexaur. But you can't revive the "kamikaze" character. The body of that character is gone... 2.1.15 LV Down [T: Level Down] ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Tonberry | | Functions : Level down your opponent's level, thus reducing | | their attributes. You will also gain less EXP. If | | you have succeeded, you see a status bar at the top | | of the screen. | | AP needed : n/a | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance of LV Down An ideal command if you want easy battles. Using the command on a monster, not only results a decrease in the attributes such as HP, Str and Mag, also weakens the monster's attacks. It is pretty good against Ruby Dragons [as they have the highest HP at Level 100]. This command is quite good as it matches well with the Bonus attributes abilities such as HP Bonus. LV Down reduces the EXP gain and but allows the same amount of AP gain. Yet, it will not lower down your score, but it is time consuming. 2.1.16 LV Up [T: Level Up] ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Tonberry | | Functions : Level up your opponent's level, increasing the stats| | causing you to gain more EXP. If you have succeeded,| | you see the status bar at the top of screen. | | AP needed : n/a | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance of LV UP This is an ideal command for building your characters. Note that the stats also goes up but make the battle more difficult. The amount of HP also increases. Good when use in conjuction with Absorb and the bonuses attributes. You can gain a lot of EXP by fighting easier enemies. 2.1.17 Devour [T: Eat] ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Eden | | Functions : A rare move. Sorry about the misleading information.| | Not all the time that this move will cause bonuses | | such HP. Sometimes it results to the character into | | disorder. After all it is still a good attack, but | | has a crappy rate. It is an INSTANT DEATH KILLING | | MOVE. You view some scenes similar to the opening | | FMV. [just pictures of grasslands and seasides.] | | AP needed : n/a | |_____________________________________________________________________| Importance of LV Up This is pretty unstable, yet sometimes bring in great results/bonuses. It has a crappy hit rate, so it does not work most of the time [result a waste of time]. It reaps in as it does an INSTANT death attack. (Thanks to Steven Bruck for the corrections) I myself has used this command on Geezards and received status disorder! _____ / 2.2 \_________________________________________________________________ ======================================================================== Junction Abilities (J) ======================================================================== In FF8, there are a few more "game" words that you are required to know and one of them is junction. This system is very hard to explain in a few words, but it's worth it. This system allows your characters to become stronger and more deadly. The system make of use of magic to boost up the character's statistics. If you want to have better attacking power, junction magic to the character's Str through Str-J. Refer to Basic Tutorial in Part I for more information. Typically, there are two types and they are: Character's Stats Junction ------------------------------------------------------------------------ * PS: For the english version, Squaresoft has use a lot of abbreviations/symbols to denote gameplay terms. E.g. "Str" is used to denote Strength. I would use it as it saves a lot of space. But if you have problems refer to the list of abbreviations under the Appendix section. It allows you to enfuse/junction magic to the character's Hit Points [HP], Strength [Str], Vitality(it means defense)[Vit], Magic [Mag], Spirit [Spr], Speed [Spd], Hit [Hit rate/Hit ratio] and Eva [Evade] The effect of junction depends on the following factors: 1. Power of the spell : Firaga will work much better to Fira. Devastating magic such as Ultima/Tornado will generally have a better effect of junction as compared to Fire. 2. Number of spells : 24x of Fire will work much better to 10x of Fire magic. Character's Elemental Attack and Defense ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Junctioning magic to elemental attack will causes the character to do more damage to the opposing elemental. For example, junctioning Fire magic to Zell's Elem-Atk-J, will cause Zell to do more damage to ice/ water based monsters such as Fastitocalon-F, Glaccid Eye, etc. Junction Fire magic to Zell's Elem-Def-J, raises Zell's defense against Fire. Elementals are crucial important in this game. A character with Fire junctioned to Elem-Atk-J will do more damage to Ice/Water elemental unit as compared to a character with no elementals junctioned. See the effect? For elemental defense only... However, certain spells generally only reduces the damage whereas some spells allows your characters to absorb the damage [and received HP instead of damage]. This is generally based on the power of spell. For example, Fire gives your character 50% defense against fire elemental damage. Fira gives your character 80% defense against fire elemental damage. Firaga gives your character 120% defense against fire elemental damage. [i.e. 100% of damage nullified and 20% of damage absorb as restoring HP] Below is a mini-elemental chart ____________________________________________________ | Element | Strong against | Weak against | |----------|----------------------|------------------| | Fire | Ice/Water | -- | | Ice | Fire | -- | | Water | Fire | -- | | Wind | Flying/Earth | -- | | Earth | Ground | Flying | | Thunder | mechanical | -- | | Poison | Humans | mechanical | | Holy | Undead | -- | |__________|______________________|__________________| ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Characters' Status Attack/Defense Abbreviations used: ST --> Status, Atk --> Attack, -J --> Junction Junctioning a status magic to ST-Atk-J such as Poison will allow the character to causes the status elemental as he/she attacks. For example, if you junction Bio magic to Quistis' ST-Atk-J, she will cause Poison status disorder as she attacks her enemies. Junctioning Poison magic to Quistis' ST-Def-J will cause Quistis to be immune against Poison status disorder. Status disorder can be a hinderance against your own party [which I myself previously thought so.] but you can also use it to attack your opponenst ("Paying an enemy back its own coin") through ST-Atk-J. The more magic you have use, the higher the percentage that your character have causes the status disorder. E.g. If you have junctioned 23x Bio, there is about 23% chance that your character will cause the status disorder, Poison. Hence 100x status spell means instant status disorder! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Further Breakdown on Junctions As the junction system is rather complex, I had decided to break it down in sections for easy explanation. First of all, you need to get used to the abbreviations. It is typically a combination of abbreviations. Plus, they are being frequently used in the FAQ. ______________________________________________________________________ | Junctions | What it does? | |---------------------|------------------------------------------------| | HP-J | Affects the capacity of the character's HP. | |---------------------|------------------------------------------------| | Str-J | Affects the attacking power of your character | | | using the Attack command and Limit Breaks. | |---------------------|------------------------------------------------| | Vit-J | Affects the defensive power of your character | | | against physical damage and non-magic attacks.| |---------------------|------------------------------------------------| | Mag-J | Affects the amount of damage that your | | | character will inflict when using magic. | |---------------------|------------------------------------------------| | Spr-J | Affects the defensive power of your character | | | against magic-type attacks, e.g. Ultima. | |---------------------|------------------------------------------------| | Spd-J | Affects the speed of the charatcer's ATB bar. | |---------------------|------------------------------------------------| | Hit-J | Affects the hit rate of your character's | | | when using the Attack command. | |---------------------|------------------------------------------------| | Eva-J | Affects the rate that your character could | | | dodge from a physical-type based attack. | |---------------------|------------------------------------------------| | Luck-J | Affects the rate of criticals and the rate | | | whether Odin will appear. | |_____________________|________________________________________________| ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.2.1. HP-J [T: HP Junction] _____________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Quezacotl, Ifrit, Brothers, Diablos, Carbuncle | | Function : Allows you to enfuse magic with the character's HP| | thus also raising the HP stats. This depends on | | the power of the spell and the number of spells | | that you have in that character's inventory. | | AP needed : 50 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| 2.2.2. Str-J [T: Strength Junction] _____________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Shiva, Ifrit, Brothers, Pandemona, Cerberus | | Functions : Allows you to enfuse magic with the character's | | Strength thus raising the stats. This depends on | | the power of the spell and the number of spells | | that you have in that character's inventory. | | AP needed : 50 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| 2.2.3. Vit-J [T: Body Strength Junction] _____________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Quezacotl, Shiva, Carbuncle | | Function : Allows you to enfuse magic with the character's | | Vitality, raising the stats. This depends on the | | power of the spell and the number of spells that | | you have in that character's inventory. | | AP needed : 50 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| 2.2.4. Mag-J [T: Magic Strength Junction] _____________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Siren, Diablos, Carbuncle, Leviathan, Cerberus | | Functions : Allows you to enfuse magic with the character's | | Magic, raising the stats. This depends on the | | power of the spell and the number of spells that | | you have in that character's inventory. | | AP needed : 50 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| 2.2.5. Spr-J [T: Spirit Junction] _____________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Shiva, Brothers, Leviathan, Cerberus, Alexander | | Functions : Allows you to enfuse magic with the character's | | Spirit, thus raising the stats. This depends on | | the power of the spell and the number of spells | | that you have in that character's inventory | | AP needed : 50 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| 2.2.6. Spd-J [T: Dexrity Junction] _____________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Pandemona, Cerberus, Eden | | Functions : Allows you to enfuse magic with the character's | | Speed, thus raising the stats. This depends on the | | power of the spell and the number of spells that | | you have in that character's inventory. | | AP needed : 120 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| 2.2.7. Hit-J [T: Hit Junction] ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Diablos, Cerberus, Eden | | Functions : Allows you to enfuse magic with the character's | | Hit rate, thus raising the stats. This depends on | | the power of the spell and the number of spells | | that you have in that character's inventory. | | AP needed : 120 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| 2.2.8. Eva-J [T: Evasion Junction] ______________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Cactuar, Eden | | Functions : Allows you to enfuse magic with the character's | | Evasion, thus raising the stats. This depends on | | the power of the spell and the number of spells | | that you have in that character's inventory. | | AP needed : 200 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| 2.2.9 Luck-J [T: Luck Junction] _____________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Cactuar | | Functions : Allows you to enfuse magic with the character's | | Luck, thus raising the stats. This depends on the | | power of the spell and the number of spells that | | you have in that character's inventory. | | AP needed : 200 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| 2.2.10. Elem-Atk-J [T: Elemental Attack Junction] _____________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Quezacotl, Shiva, Ifrit, Brothers, Leviathan, | | Pandemona, Alexander, Doomtrain | | Functions : Gives your attacks with some magic. This is similar| | FF7's Elemental. For example, if you want to do | | more damage to Fire-based elemental, use Blizzard*.| | However, if you attack against Ice-base monster, | | the monster will absorb the attack! | | AP needed : 160 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| 2.2.11. Elem-Def-J [T: Elemental Defense Junction] _____________________________________________________________________ | | | GFs : Quezacotl, Shiva, Ifrit, Brothers, Leviathan, | | Pandemona, Alexander | | Functions : Raises your defense against specific elementals. | | Similar to FF7's Elemental Combo at the Armor. For | | if you want defend well against Fire-based attacks,| | use Fire. The character will absorb the elemental | | and recover lost HP [provide 100 kind of that | | spell] Ultima will protect your character from all | | elementals. | | AP needed : 100 AP | |_____________________________________________________________________| 2.2.12.
