To change leader (or controlling character), just while in the dungeon, press Up on the D-Pad. This will allow you to choose the leader. Please note once the leader is KO'd, you will be given an option for reselecting your leader. 01-02-02 Status --------------------- It will allows you to view the status of all members. You can use L1 and R1 button to switch between characters. Press X or Square to view the list of activate command screens. The status screen also shows vital information such as character's level, stats and how many experience points gained, etc. 01-02-03 Equip --------------------- This allows you to equip equipment (Weapon, Shield, Headgear, Armor and Accessories). However unlike previous Final Fantasies, to equip an equipment, the character must acquire the license for it and got the equipment via purchase, treasure hunting or steal/defeat enemies. You can make use of the Optimize option to select the best equipment for equipping. But the Optimize option may not always be the best choice though... 01-02-04 License --------------------- This is the character management system in Final Fantasy XII. Treat it like the Materia System for FFVII, Junction System for FFVIII, Sphere Grid System for FFX. The License allows your characters to acquire licenses for Magicks (or commonly known as Magic and it is not wrong spelling by the way...), Technicks, Espers, Quickenings ( the FFXII's equivalent of Limit Breaks or Overdrive) and Equipment License. It also include status bonuses such as HP plus and Gambit Plus. More details will be covered under Section 01-06 01-02-05 Gambit --------------------- This allows you to priortize your Gambits and whether set on or off Gambits for your characters. Gambits are very useful for support and you can also set them in a way to have automatic battles and you just need to move the characters around. For more details, please refer to Section 01-05. 01-02-06 World Map ---------------------- The World Map of the area that the party is currently located at can be accessed by pressing the SELECT button. You will automatically get full maps when you access towns. While in the world, you will uncover new areas by exploring which will also updates your world maps. For dungeons, you can get a full map by purchasing them from moogles that are scattered all over the world. 01-02-07 Inventory ----------------------- You will be able to view all the inventory that you have gotten from your adventure. It will covers Magicks & Technicks, Items, Loot, Key Items, Equipment, etc. You can store them. Unlike previous Final Fantasies, you can use items only via the Item command found in Battle Menu. 01-02-08 Clan Primer ----------------------- The Clan Primer is like a beginneer's guide to Final Fantasy XII. It will features Hunt, Bestiary, Sky Pirate's Den and Traveller's Tips. As you go deeper into the adventurer, the Clan Primer will get updated. More details will be covered in the other sections. 01-02-09 Config ----------------------- It allows you to modify the configuration settings for your game. More details will be cover under Section 01-04 --------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03 NAVIGATION & EXPLORING --------------------------------------------------------------------- ffxii_0103 01-03-01 Conversation --------------------------- When you approach a character whom you can engage a conversation, you will see the !! talk icon appearing on the top of the character. Just press X or Square to initiate the conversation. This also applies to examining objects. 01-03-02 Conversation Logs --------------------------------- Once you finished a conversation with a character, you will be able to access the conversation logs by using the Triangle button. Use Up and Down on the D-Pad to back track the conversation. A pretty useful feature if you don't intend to hear all the conversation again. 01-03-03 Radar ------------------------- The radar map will appear on the top right hand corner. Below are the legend for the radar. ------------------------------------------------------- Icon Meaning ------------------------------------------------------- Blue Your characters Big Blue Esper Green People in town/ Chocobo Red Enemy Big Red Mark Blue Lines Next Area ------------------------------------------------------- After Vaan finished his rat cleaning mission, you will be able to access the World Map menu. Press SELECT to view the full map. 01-03-04 Maps ----------------------- Maps are very useful as it allows you to locate your destinations. In FFXII, you can obtain a full map in 2 method - the 1st method is by exploring and the 2nd method is by buying maps. Maps can be bought from moogles that you find in towns. Below are the meaning of the abbreviations that I will be using in the ASCII maps for the walkthrough. ------------------------------------------------------------ Abbr. Meaning ------------------------------------------------------------ [IS] Item Shop [WS] Weapon Shop [MS] Magick Shop [GC] Technick Shop [GS] Gambit Shop [AD] Aerodome [INN] Taverns, Inns [SC] Save Crystal [GC] Gate Crystal/Gate Crystal (Usually it is named after the city/dungeon) ------------------------------------------------------------ If you select the map and point your cursor at the map, you will find the name of that area. This is very important as most of the time, I will be refering the walkthrough areas to the names. In the main screen of the menu, you will see a numeric figure on the lower right end of the screen. That indicates the number steps you have taken. 01-03-05 Treasure Chests/Pots ----------------------------------- In Final Fantasy XII, the items contained in the treasure pots are not fixed and they will appear randomnly on the map. They will locate normally at the edge of the area and will regenerate every time you reset the game. However, there are some treasure pots that you should never open: ------------------------------------------------------------ DO-NOT-OPEN TREASURE CHESTS o- Strongest Weapon in FFXII -o ------------------------------------------------------------ Chest #1 Location: Lowtown - Outside Dalan's House ------------------------------------------------------------ Chest #2 Location: Royal Palace - Cellar (All treasure chests) ------------------------------------------------------------ Chest #3 Location: Nalbina Fortess - Confiscatory (All treasure chests) ------------------------------------------------------------ Chest #4 Location: Phon Coast - The Vaddu Strand (the place with 16 Treasure Chests) ------------------------------------------------------------ I will suggest to you to take note of these on a piece of paper. In the dungeons, you will find Urns and you will retrieve maps from it. As the treasure obtained from pots are completely random, it is pointless to state them. Some of the chests will allow you to obtain rarer treasure with assistance of equipping the Diamond Armlet. When you are appointing a treasure chest, the ! icon will appear on the top of leading character. When you are near a target that you can examine, you can see !! icon and X button where you can follow up with some actions. 01-03-06 Save Crystal and Gate Crystal ------------------------------------------------ There are 2 types of crystals where you can save your game. They are found in dungeons and cities. The Save Crystal is blue in colour while the Gate Crystal (usually named after the town/area) is orange. Upon touching the crystal, your party will restore all HP/MP and all status ailments will be cure as well. To save your game, you will need to have a Memory Card. The Gate Crystal works like the Save Crystal except you can use it to teleport from towns to towns by using a Teleport Stone. Teleport Stones can be obtained from hunts and most enemies drop them. Please note that you need to have at least 2 Teleport Stones to teleport from one town to another. In Rabanstre, there is a Moogling network which allows you to teleport from one of the town to the other end. This moogling network will available in the Rabanastre after Vaan and gang has escape from the Nalbina Fortess. 01-03-07 Experience & License Points ----------------------------------------- Defeating enemies will nab you experience points, license points and sometimes an inventory item. Experience points are necessary for your characters to level up and gains for attribute stats. Licenses, on the other hand are required for you to learn abilities via the License Board. Non-participating characters will gain LP but not the experience points. Unlike previous Final Fantasies, bosses and "marks" do not award experience points when you defeat them. The License Board will be discussed in greater detail under Section 01-07. 01-03-08 Chocobo Ranch ---------------------------- Riding on Chocobos will allow you to prevent you from being attacked by enemies. You can hire Chocobos from moogles (owners) of the ranch for a certain price. Chocobo Ranch are normally located at the borders of the towns. When riding a Chocobo, you can use the Sprint feature up to 3 times by pressing the X button. You will automatically dismount when the time is up or you choose to dismount by pressing Circle button. When riding a Chocobo, there are a few points to take note of: o You won't be attack by enemies o You will be able to move the area faster (the legs of Chocobo are definitely longer than your characters) o You cannot access any treasure chests o You cannot enter any towns/resting places (where only Vaan appears on the screen. You can hitch a ride on a "Wayward Chocobo" and give it a Gysahl Greens for a ride. Please note that the Chocobo outside the Henne Mines does not require you a Gysahl Greens. 01-03-09 Clan Primer & Clan Rank -------------------------------------- The Clan Primer is FFXII's equivalent of the Tutorial menu of the previous enemies. You will be able to access it from your menu, once Vaan visits Tomaj for the first time. The Clan Primer will get updates as you progress in the game. As you defeated monsters, you will get Clan Points. When you defeat a certain number of Hunts and accumulated a certain amount of points, your Clan Rank will improve. Make sure you visit the Clan Hall that is located in the North End. 01-03-10 Loot and Items ------------------------------- Monsters will drop random loot (items that cannot be used for combat but can be sold for gil) and items. In FFXII, most enemies no longer drop gil as often as previous FF series. Loot will be dropped more often if you engaged in chains for fighting enemies in the dungeons. More details will be discussed in battling. Selling loot items will be your way of earning gil. But be careful, selling loot will trigger the effect of Bazaar Goods. Please refer to Section 10-01 for more details. Items, on the other hand, can used for healing or attacking. These items can be purchased from item shops that are located in towns or via quests. 01-03-11 Shops ------------------------ In FFXII, there are a total of 6 kinds of shops and they are: - Items Shops: These shops sell items, ammunition and accessories - Weapons Shops: These shops sell weapon - swords, knives, axes, bows, poles, rods, maces, measures, spears, etc. - Armor Shops: These shops sell mainly body armor, headgears and shields. - Magicks Shops: These shop sell magicks scrolls (white, black, green, arcane & time) - Technicks Shops: These shops sells technicks scrolls - Gambits Shops: These shops sells Gambit Targets Buying the items alone from the shops alone are not enough as you need to acquire the license to use them. The only things that do not need require to a license is using Items command. However, on the License Board, you can use augment items that allows you to boost your character's use of items. Like previous series, shops can sell new items as you progress into the game. For your convenience, the walkthrough will cover the updated shopping list as well. 01-03-12 Bazaar Goods ----------------------------- Bazaar Goods are special items that will be sold from the shops when you sold a certain criteria in a shop. For example, if you will sell 2 Cactus Fruit to an Item Shop. The Bazaar Good - Potions Pack will be available in all shops that you visit (which also includes in other towns!). For the full listing of Bazaar goods, please refer to the item bestiary for more details. 01-03-13 Pause Menu -------------------------- You will pause the game at any point of time except when your characters are in middle using a Mist Quickening Combo. The pause menu will stop your game time and it will allows you the following options as well: Pause Menu Options [START button] Circle: Continue Square: Reset the game X: Skip --------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04 CONFIG --------------------------------------------------------------------- ffxii_0104 This screen can be access via the Config option from the main menu. At the bottom of the screen, you will see your character's HP and MP. There is a orange ATB bar which execute the selected action once it is full. Below are the basic battle concepts: 01-05-01 Target Lines -------------------------- The lines will appear on the battle when you are targeting an enemy. If you target the enemy first, the line will be blue and if you got targeted first, the line will be red. You can made use of the right analog stick to look around. If your character is targeted, the font of character's name will be highlighted in red. Green colour target lines are support magick target lines. Purple colour target lines are opposition support magick target lines. 01-05-02 Battle Menu ------------------------ The menu will not appear once you engage in the battle. Press X once you will be able to access a menu which allows you to select to attack, use Magicks or Technicks or use an item. If they are not readily apparent, use the right analog stick to look around. When you have found them, press X to open the battle menu. Once you've selected Attack and target a foe/enemy, close the distance using the left analog stick. You'll automatically attack until your foe is defeated. You can change targets or action at any time, if your HP falls, press X and select Items from the battle menu, then use a healing item e.g. Potion. After using an item, you will automatically resume your previous action. There is no need for you to input your commands again. 01-05-03 Movement ---------------------- As you will be able to move around the battlefield, movement is a critical factor in the success of battles in FFXII. You can move to dodge and attack enemy from behind. Please note that you need to be close to your enemy if your character are using short-ranged weapons like swords as they don't throw their swords to attack :) 01-05-04 Attacking ----------------------- The basic attack command allows your character to wield his/her weapon to attack an enemy. Below are the 4 possible scenarios could happen when you intiate an attack: ATTACK: Your character has hit the enemy with the weapon BLOCK: Your character blocks the attack with his/her shield/weapon PARRY: Your character parries the attack with his weapons. Parrying does not occur with a character using long-range weapons such as Guns. MISS: Your character misses the attack. The acquisition of augments - Shield Block lores help increase the effectiveness of using shields. Attack will also depend on the distance between your character and target along with the hit rate of the weaponary. You can buy weapons from weapon shop and you must get the required license to use them. Weather and environmental settings have an impact on the hit rate of long-range weapons. 01-05-05 Magick and Technicks --------------------------------- In Final Fantasy XII, magic spells are known as "Magick" while skills/ techniques are known as "Technick" Although magicks and technicks are available for purchasing at shops, merely purchasing one of these does not necessarily mean you can use it. You will also need the corresponding license for the ability purchased. Unlike weapons and armor, purchasing one magick or technick allows all characters in the party to use the corresponding ability provided they have he appropriate license. You can check which magicks and technicks you have acquiring using the Inventory menu. You can also find out what are magicks & technicks that a character can use by using the status screen. More details about Magick and Technicks will be covered under their respective bestiaries. 01-05-06 Monsters ---------------------- In Final Fantasy XII, there are 4 kinds of monsters and they are: o-----------------------------------------------------------------o | ~ Normal ~ | |These are the normal enemies that you will encounter in Final | |Fantasy XII. If there is more than 1 enemy in the same area, you | |will find them named with an alphabet at the end (e.g. Wolf A, | |Wolf B, etc). You | |will get zero EXP and only LP. | o-----------------------------------------------------------------o Enemies' life bar are normally represent by orange bars while your party's life bars are represented by blue bars. For friendly or neutral monsters are represented by green bars. if you do not provoke it, it will not attack your character. Please note that non-damage inflicting commands such as Steal can also turn a neutral monster into an enemy monster. You can also cause a neutral monster change sides when you attack one of its kind. In the Clan Primer, it will contain literacy writtings on the monsters with regards to the history of Ivalice. You will get a monster input into the clan primer upon defeating it and get a literacy writting when you have killed a certain amount of enemies of its kind. You will not be able to view stats of the enemies unless you have cast Libra technick or equip the Bangle. With Libra, you will be able to gather more useful information on the enemy. 01-05-07 Status Ailments --------------------------------------- Status ailments can be useful for your battles but they can pose a serious problems if you do not remedied it early. A Libra technick cast usually last around 10 minutes of game time and will wear off as time lapse. You can have Libra on permanently when one of the characters is equipped with a Bangle accessory (you need that license as well) Libra will reveal the monster's level, current HP vs. max HP and its elemental weakness and positive status that it has on. It will also reveals traps in dungeons (which are marked red lines). Hence it is a very useful spell. To move pass traps without any trigger, it is best that you cast Float, time magick, which allows your party members (including Guests) to travel pass through traps. 01-05-10 Drop/Steal/Poach ----------------------------- Most of the times, enemies will drop items/loot upon its defeat. You will find item bags on the floor where you can pick them up by moving your controlled character over. If you have acquired the Poach or Steal license you can get items immediately by using these technicks via the command menu. However this method will works only once and the success rate are not very high unless you got equipped your character with Thief Cuffs. The more chains you have created, the higher the chances of loot/items being dropped from the enemies. For your convenience, the walkthrough will includes a summary of all the monsters that you will encounter in that area and what are the items that they will drop. Please note that Poaching does not work on bosses, hunts and most rare games. When an enemy is poached, you will get the item but you will not get any experience points or license points. Poach will generally take longer to charge. For each method, there is a rare version of items to obtain. You have only 1% to 5% chances of obtaining rare drop, steal or poach. 01-05-11 Chains ------------------- You will get a chain if you defeat a monster of its same type. E.g. in the Dalmasca Estersand, if you defeat 2 Cactities in a row, you will get 1 Chain. If you defeat another Cactites, you will get 2 Chain. However if you defeat a Wolf, the chain will be broken (identified on a red cross on the chain). A chain will be broken when you exit from a dungeon to a town (like crossing over from Dalmasca Eastersand back to Rabanstre) or when you have touched a Save/Gate Crystal. The longer chains you get, the better the items/loot that the enemy will drop. At a certain point of time, you will get a Chain level up and they will get special effects like restoring HP or casting positive status such as Protect or Shell. Below are some generic notes on chains: Chains will be broken when one of the following conditions happens: o You have killed another monster o You have exit the dungeon and head for a new dungeon o You have touched a Save/Gate Crystal o Your party was wiped out by the enemy :) Chains can be levelled up too. There are 3 levels of chain level: o Level 0 -- Normal - item bags o Level 1 -- Blue coins o Level 2 -- Gold coins o Level 3 -- Big gold coins The levelling up of chains is completely random. According the Battle Mechanics FAQ by Maltzsan, you can level up faster if you do not pick any loot. Rare loot like Destrier Barding (from Leynir) can be dropped on when you get large chains. You gain a chain level up between 6 to 10 kills, provided that you do not pick any item bags. 01-05-12 Gambits -------------------- Gambits are special set of effects that will trigger when a certain Gambit target conditions are being fulfilled. Each character starts with 2 Gambit slots and you can turn them on or off in the command screen or via the menu screen when Balthier and Fran joins your party. However, at the beginning of the game, you will start off with a limited range of targets. Gambit targets can be bought from Gambits Shops or via treasure pots in dungeons. You can increase the number of Gambit slots but obtain the license for it on the License board. More details regarding the Gambit will be covered indepth under Section 01-06. 01-05-13 Mist Quickenings ---------------------------- Limit Breaks or Overdrives are gone and your characters no longer need to be in crisis status (i.e. critical HP) in order to use them. There are a total of 18 Mist Quickenings and each character can learn a maximum of 3 Mist Quickenings. Each Quickening will cost 50 LP and they are represented by orange orbs. These are normally found at the edge of the license board. Once you have acquired a License for Quickening, the other characters on the License Board won't be able to use the slot to acquire a Mist License. In other words, the 18 Mist Quickenings are exclusive to the characters who have acquired the license first. When you got a Mist Quickening, your character will be able to use it when his/her MP is full and it will be highlighted by an orange bar. An orange orb will appear next to the name of the character. If your character has 2 Mist Quickenings, the MP gauge of the character will be doubled. In other words, the faster you have acquired the Mist Quickening, the more MP the character will have. The animations for a Mist Quickening is flashy and you can link up if other character has also acquired a Mist Quickening as well. By linking them up, your characters can chain their attacks up for more damage. More details about Mist Quickening will be discussed in Section 01-08. 01-05-14 Esper Summons -------------------------- Once you defeat an Esper, it will appear on the License Board. Only 1 character can obtain that license. When summoning an Esper, other characters will lead the battlefield and you will be left only when the summoning character and the Esper. Esper are controlled by the in-game Gambits and they can unleash a Quickening of their own when a certain condition is made. You can dismiss the Esper at any point of time or when the Esper's HP is being fully depleted. 01-05-15 Allies ------------------- Ocassionally, you will see allies assisting your party to fight enemies like the Rabanastre Watch that you will encounter while wondering around in Dalmasca Estersand. Postive status magick such as Cura will also help to cure the allies as well. You can attack an ally too. Some allies won't change sides while some will... --------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-06 LICENSE BOARD --------------------------------------------------------------------- ffxii_0106 For the first time in the series, FINAL FANTASY XII moves past any notion of classes - pre-determined sets of skills and strengths, such as a black mage or warrior. Characters begin the story as nearly blank slates, and it is up to the player to decide which abilities they will learn. As characters defeat enemies in battle, they gain License Points. Spend these points to acquire License that enable Magicks & Technicks, and determine which arms and armor they can equip. Licenses are like mile posts, marking your progress as your combat skill improve. You will need to acquire in order to use Magicks, Technicks, equiping weapon and armor, etc STEP 1: Select a character STEP 2: You will be at the Licence Board It shows which licenses you already have, as well as some new ones waiting to be obtained. Acquired licenses are marked with a star. The more licences you have, the more equipment you'll be able to use and the more abilities you'll have to choose from. For equipment, having a license alone isn't enough. You will need to have the equipment in your inventory. Unacquired equipment will be grayed out. You will also need to buy Magicks from a Magick Shop and arms from a smithy before you'll be able to put those licenses to use. It doesn't matter which you get first, magicks & equipment, or the license to use them, so long as you have both. You can use any Magnicks and Technicks in your possession as soon as you acquire the necessary license. But you will have to equip weapons and armor before they'll do you any good. The number at the top left corner screen is your accumulated license points. You can acquire any license that's next to one you already have, but only if you have enough license points. STEP 3: Select a License to acquire Use the directional buttons to navigate the license board. Select the license and press X to acquire it. Once you acquired a new license, more new licenses will appear on the license board. To obtain License Points (LP), you can obtain it by defeating enemies. However, don't be in a hurry to spend all your points though think about which licenses you really need or you might regret it later. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-06-01 License Board & Its Licenses ----------------------------------------------------------------------- For your convenience, I have created an ASCII diagram of the entire list of licenses that you can acquire. _____________________________________________________________________ Getting the weapon without the License is pretty useless in FFXII. The weapon licenses are found at the lower section of the license board. Weapons can be classified as 1-handed, 2-handed or range weapons. For 1-handed weapons, the character can equip a shield for increased protection. For ranged weapons, please note that you need to equip an ammunition item to work. (LP) Most enemies offer 1 LP while some offers 2 LP. Rare Games, Elementals, Entites and Bosses will offer more LP. Please note non-participating characters (i.e. character in the reserve) will also gain LP unlike EXP. You can double the earning of LP by equipping a Golden Amulet (however, the character must gain the license to equip that accessory). They will be indicated by orange guages called "Mist Charges" If you have 2 Quickenings, the character's MP will be doubled. If you have 3 Quickenings, the character's MP will be tripled.
