The Al Bhed are a species originating in the PlayStation 2 game, Final Fantasy X, who also reappear in Final Fantasy X-2. They are well-known for their distinctive taste in clothing; their appearance, especially their swirly pupils; and mainly the cipher they speak. I wrote this guide because I found the Al Bhed to be interesting characters, and I see myself relating more to them than any other race in the Final Fantasy series. So here is my guide focusing on the unique "language" of Al Bhed. ============================================================================= [02] LANGUAGE VS. CIPHER VS. DIALECT ============================================================================= I know this has been on the minds of everyone... AL BHED IS A CIPHER?: · Yes. Al Bhed is a cipher, not a language. According to the Dictionary, a cipher is "A private alphabet, system of characters, or other mode of writing, contrived for the safe transmission of secrets; also, a writing in such characters." Al Bhed is exactly that, a "secret code" spoken only by the Al Bhed. WHY WOULDN'T AL BHED BE CONSIDERED A DIALECT?: · A dialect is "A regional or social variety of a language distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary, especially a variety of speech differing from the standard literary language or speech pattern of the culture in which it exists: Cockney is a dialect of English." Bronx is a dialect of English, Ôsaka is a dialect of Japanese, but Al Bhed is not a dialect of Japanese or English. What you hear is their accent. WHY WOULDN'T AL BHED BE CONSIDERED A LANGUAGE?: · A language is a "Communication of thoughts and feelings through a system of arbitrary signals, such as voice sounds, gestures, or written symbols." English, German, French, and Spanish are languages -- not Al Bhed. A real language has their own words, sentence structures, and etc. Klingon in Star Trek and Sindarin in Lord Of The Rings are languages, not Al Bhed. THEN WHY ARE YOU CALLING AL BHED A LANGUAGE IN THIS GUIDE?: · Because in the Japanese version of Final Fantasy X, they call Al Bhed as "Aru Bedo go" which translates into "Al Bhed language". Therefore I am used to calling it a language. The Japanese do use a different word for cipher, which is "Angô". I believe that Square Soft of Japan's reasoning to use the word "language" due to one dictionary meaning, "A race, as distinguished by its speech." The Al Bhed were distinguished by their unique language. · Al Bhed IS a cipher, but in my Guide, I would refer to it as a "language". IS IT WRONG TO CALL AL BHED A LANGUAGE?: · As long as you understand that it's really a cipher, I don't see any harm in calling Al Bhed a language. So before you start speaking/typing Al Bhed, you must learn the basics. Remember that these "rules" aren't written in stone, they are subjected to change! --------------------------------------- RULE 01 - WHAT CAN/CANNOT BE TRANSLATED!: --------------------------------------- KNOW YOUR KEYWORDS!: · There are certain words that can spoken in Al Bhed and certain words that cannot. These are better known as "keywords", those that cannot be translated. The keywords are proper nouns, nouns, and subjects. Not everything is spoken in Al Bhed! NOUNS: · Nouns are a person's name, place, or thing; but there is a minor note about these nouns. Some nouns can be translated into Al Bhed, while others are kept untranslated. PROPER NOUNS: · We do know for certain that proper nouns are to be kept untranslated. Proper nouns are an unique person, place, or thing. Things that should be best kept untranslated are people's names such as "Sin", "Tidus", and "Rikku". We know this because the Al Bhed will shout in the game, "'Sin' ec lusa!" ["'Sin' is come!"] · Another thing kept untranslated are titles such as "Summoner". One Al Bhed did say, "Dryd ec fnuhk! Guado ku vun dra Summoner." ["That is wrong! Guado go for the Summoner."] · But honorific titles such as father, mother, son, sister, and etc. can be translated. Rikku and Brother both call Cid, "Vydran" ["Father"]. PLACES: · As for places, they are left untranslated. We see this in the sign which states "Kilika yht Bikanel zueh yc uha" ["Kilika and Bikanel join as one"]. · Only minor, unimportant places such as an oasis, house, garage, roof, and etc. are translated. We know this because there's a sign at the Sanubia Desert which states, "Uycec yrayt" ["Oasis ahead"]. SUBJECTS: · Subjects are "The noun, noun phrase, or pronoun in a sentence or clause that denotes the doer of the action or what is described by the predicate." With a phrase such as "I want to go to the park." Park is the subject of this sentence. We know that subjects are keywords because when Rikku's men first met Tidus, they say, "Y fiend! Eh risyh teckieca!" ["A fiend! In human disguise!"]. Therefore "fiend" is the subject, because they are talking about you. So be sure to not translate them. Another example is what Brother said at the Sanubia Desert, "Ouin bnaleuic Magic yht Aeons yna caymat!" ["Your precious Magic and Aeons are sealed!"] "Magic" is the subject, while "Aeons" are the proper noun. EXCLAMATIONS: · Exclamations such as "Yeah!", "Hurrah!", and etc. can be translated. Cid have said, "Oaaryy!" ["Yeehaa!"] and Brother have said, "Fruy!" ["Whoa!"]. Do note that laughter is left untranslated. --------------------------------------- RULE 02 - HOW TO TRANSLATE: --------------------------------------- ENGLISH TO AL BHED: · If you want learn how to write an Al Bhed word in English, is to make sure you are writing it out first into English and then translate it into Al Bhed. Such as write down the word "laugh" and translate it into Al Bhed which would result in the word "myikr". Therefore L = M, A = Y, U = I, G = K, and H = R. JAPANESE TO AL BHED: · Remember that the Japanese does not have the same alphabet as English. So if you want to write down "laugh" in Japanese, the word would be "warau". So translate "warau" into Japanese Al Bhed and it would result in the word "KANAFU". Therefore WA = KA, RA = NA, and U = FU. AL BHED TO ENGLISH/JAPANESE: · If you wanted to translate "myikr", just translate it back into English and you would result with the word "laugh". The same applies to "KANAFU", you can translate it back into Japanese to result with the word "warau". IMPORTANT NOTE!: · One common problem some people have with Al Bhed is that they try to translate it into "Al Bhed-English" first! Then the result is that they get some bizarre phrase which looks Al Bhed, but it's actually nonsense! Remember that you always translate using "English-Al Bhed" first! Because you are using an English word and want to translate it into Al Bhed. The same applies to the Japanese version. --------------------------------------- RULE 03 - QUICK TRANSLATION FORMULA: --------------------------------------- · If someone has told you "Dryhgc!" and you want to know what does it mean without having to rely on an Al Bhed translator. There is a quick way to translate it, and it's all done by memory. Because the key to learning Al Bhed is to remember it little-by-little. · Easy words that you can remember are "cunno" ["sorry"], "oui" ["you"], and "fyed" ["wait"]. Rikku has said these words to you in the beginning of the game. Since you know what those translate into, you already know that C = S, U = O, N = R, O = Y, I = Y, F = W, Y = A, E = I, and D = T. See, that's already 9 letters out of 26 in the alphabet -- not a bad start! Now apply those and you can easily translate words such as "fyn" ["war"], "duo" ["toy"], and "ynnuf" ["arrow"]. It takes practice, but you'll get a hang of it after a while. Remember that all of the vowels are grouped together and scrambled, while the consonants are scrambled amongst each other. The same applies to the Japanese version. --------------------------------------- RULE 04 - HOW TO WRITE IN AL BHED: --------------------------------------- ENGLISH = CASE SENSITIVE: · Since most people write/type Al Bhed than speaking it, do note that the English Al Bhed is case sensitive! So you write it like how you would with regular English sentence structures. JAPANESE = NOT CASE SENSITIVE: · But with the Japanese Al Bhed, it's a whole different story! I keep it in all in capitals because that is how I differentiate between the regular Katakana from the palatalizations. The ONLY time that you would have to use lowercased lettering is when you're indicating the long vowels. WHEN JAPANESE IS CASE-SENSITIVE: · When you are writing out keywords, be sure to leave those keywords as case sensitive. Such as the word "Aru Bedo Zuku" ["Al Bhed"] should not be written down as "Aru Bedo ZUKU". Because it then misleads people into thinking that "ZUKU" is meant to be translated, which comes out as "bufu", meaning "Warrior; Samurai". And it has absolutely nothing to do with the original intended word "Zuku" which means "tribe; race". PAY ATTENTION TO THE LONG VOWELS: · The long vowels can be a killer to write in Japanese Al Bhed. Such as the word "mâketto" ["market"] has a long vowel of "a". You wouldn't want to write it out as "YAWATESSO" because in English terms, it's like writing down "Market" as "Marrket". The correct way to write it would be "YÂTESSO" or "YAaTESSO", which indicates there is a long "a" vowel. So whenever you've encounter long vowels, you can do one of two things: 1.) Be sure to lowercase the last vowel to indicate a long vowel. 2.) Put a circumflex ( ^ ) over the vowel. STICK TO YOUR OWN LANGUAGE!: · If you know English, speak/write the English Al Bhed; but if you know Japanese, speak/write the Japanese Al Bhed. Don't try to assume that you know Japanese and try to use their Al Bhed and vice versa. The reason is because you will most likely make a lot of mistakes. So please use the language you are most familiar with. --------------------------------------- RULE 05 - PRONUNCIATION IS KEY!: --------------------------------------- · As with most languages, anyone can write it, but what separates them are those who can speak it. Pronunciation is key to learning Al Bhed! Like what Stefan have told me, "Pronunciation is the key to actually USING the language." So if you wish to speak it aloud, be sure that you know the proper pronunciation. · Do note that the spoken Al Bhed in the Japanese version was a clever use of rearranged consonants, only possible with the Japanese language. It was so clever that it could actually be learnt and spoken normally with practice. The American version had to compensate by creating made-up sounds for the words, while keeping up the ability of rearranging letters. · Please read my pronunciation guide about how to pronounce words in the English Al Bhed before continuing. ============================================================================= [06] PRONUNCIATION GUIDE ============================================================================= The Al Bhed language is spoken mostly with a Slavic accent in the American version. [The Japanese version is unable to produce these accents, but they do speak the language in a significant tone.] Here is a listing as how to pronounce each letter. Do note that this pronunciation guide is not 100% correct, please use it wisely! They tend to pronounce the same word differently, which is the reason as to why my Pronunciation Guide is not 100% correct. In the game, Nedus pronounces the word "taydr" as "tay'durr". While Rikku may not say the same word as Nedus, she does pronounce a similar rhyming word "fedr". She pronounces "fedr" as "ff'ed". But if we were using Nedus' pronunciation of "taydr" as reference, shouldn't Rikku pronounce "fedr" as "fe'durr" instead? Therefore, no Al Bhed pronunciation is set in stone. Even Square Soft of America has said that they with Al Bhed, they had to mix a whole bunch of languages such as Welsh, Hawaiian, German, and etc. to finalize the language. ============================================================================= [07] AL BHED PRIMERS: LOCATIONS ============================================================================= Here are the primary locations of the Al Bhed Primers around Spira. When you find a certain Primer, it will decipher a bit of the Al Bhed language. Thus leaving the translated dialogue in red and the untranslated dialogue in blue. Do note that some Primers can be relocated if you missed them, or they are only exclusive to that area which are covered in the later sections of this guide. You will find them buried deep in the Eastern part of the Sanubia Desert, but only 4 Primers would be relocated. Here are the relocated Primers and where to find them in the Sanubia Desert: · AL BHED PRIMER VOL. I = Search the northeast area of the Oasis. · AL BHED PRIMER VOL. III = It is around the front where Wakka is at. · AL BHED PRIMER VOL. V = At the eastern part where Kimahri is at. · AL BHED PRIMER VOL. He would then reward you with 99 quantities of a Key Item called "Kyukuten No Kagi" ["Reverse Key"], or in the American version as "Underdog's Secret". What the "Underdog's Secret" does is that by synthesizing 30 of them into your weapon, it would allow you to do "Double Overdrives"! Be sure to synthesize 3 of them to your favorite party members and watch the damage fly! But wait, there are more usage for them! Such as you can sell them for 5000 Gil each or you can combine them with other items via Rikku's Overdrive, "Mix": http://www.square-enix-usa.com/strategy/FFX_strategy/Rikku.htm ============================================================================= [12] AL BHED COMPILATION SPHERES ============================================================================= There are blue Spheres called the Al Bhed Compilation Spheres. What it does is that it searches the PlayStation 2's slots for any Memory Cards you have. Then it compiles any missing Primers from the saves there to your current game, as you can see in your Key Items. This way you won't have to be upset if you have missed one Primer. There are 5 Spheres located around Spira.: BAAJ TEMPLE - SUBMERGED RUINS: · It is due west of the pillar, which has a sign that inscribes, "Eh dra myht frana pumdc uv mekrd emmisehyda dra pmylgacd hekrd Fedr Macalania pareht dra vuindr bemmyn oui cekrd muug hud uh dra mavd pid uh dra nekrd." Q: What is the correct translation to Track 15 of Disc 1 from the Final Fantasy X Original Soundtrack? A: It's Japanese title is "CHII Wa Aru Bedo Zuku". It has been incorrectly translated as "Al Bhed Tribe's Chi" or "Chee Is An Al Bhed Tribe", not understanding that "CHII" is an Al Bhed word. The correct translation to this title would be "CHII Are (An) Al Bhed", "CHII" being the Japanese Al Bhed for "kimi", meaning "you".
