Final Fantasy Explorers, announced for the 3DS, is an action RPG featuring many elements of classic Final Fantasy. Local multiplayer and online multiplayer will be a staple of the game, though you’ll be able to quest solo. You’ll be able to select from about twenty iconic Jobs and mix and match skills you learn from those classes once certain conditions are met. Previously revealed were Knight, White Mage, Black Mage, and Monk — but other jobs include: Dragoon, Paladin, Thief, and Ninja. Unique jobs to the game are also planned.

Set on a large island, you’ll be able to explore and fight against many Final Fantasy series monsters such as coeurls and iron giants. You’ll be able to tame some for your own purposes, and monsters themselves will have a growth system. Summoned monsters such as Ifrit will have a larger role befitting their status. Collecting materials will allow you to forge new pieces of equipment. Six slots are available: head, body, right hand, left hand, legs, and accessory.

Don’t expect Final Fantasy Explorers to dry up as soon as you beat the scenario. The team is planning for a hefty post-game that is intended to tide people over for at least 100 to 200 hours, including the collection of rare equipment. If you’re not good at action games you’ll still be able to enjoy Explorers, the team reassures.

Some of the team attached to the project have also been revealed:

Director: Atsushi Hashimoto (SaGa 2: Goddess of Destiny)
Producer:
Hiroyuki Miura (Final Fantasy I-V Advance, Final Fantasy IV DS)
Project Manager:
Takahiro Abe (Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection)
Title Logo:
Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy series)
Character Designer:
Toshiyuki Itahana (Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series)
Design Supervisor:
Gen Kobayashi (The World Ends with You, SaGa 2: Goddess of Destiny)
Composer:
Tsuyoshi Sekito (Final Fantasy series arranger, Square Enix arranger)

Final Fantasy Explorers is currently announced for 3DS in Japan.

I have to say I’m glad a new 3DS FF is being made, and not exclusively on mobile phones. I don’t really have any intense grudges against mobile gaming, I just think it’s the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the gaming world and is more suited for casuals and people on the go, I don’t feel FF is the type of thing that should be designed to be played on the go, it’s a series that’s deep and complex and requires countless hours. Explorers is sounding better and better with each new set of details revealed. I dig the monster recruiting idea and multiplayer.

I am genuinely excited for this! Hopefully they have a release date for the US sometime this year.

Yeah, I’m personally excited to see more details myself. Impressions circulating on the JP seem to have us believe that it’s something of a FFXI/XIV-like experience tailored for a handheld. Hopefully we’ll get some gameplay footage soon!

Trademarks for “Final Fantasy Explorers” have been filed in Europe and North America. Just saying. Not that important.
