Duodecim developer interview post-TGS

September 26th, 2010 by Tony Garsow

b_ddff012_logoA new developer interview made it’s way onto the internet tonight from Volume 13 of Blitz Games, and we have some new insight about the PSP sequel and some of the surprises we may have in store in the next several months.

Tetsuya Nomura was asked about Dissidia 012 [duodecim]: Final Fantasy, and what relation this game has to the original title. He replied that the first Dissidia was the thirteenth battle, and that Duodecim is the twelfth battle, essentially making this game a prequel. “The game is entirely new”, he added. Development on the title started last August it seems, while the team was working on Universal Tuning. Mitsunori Takahashi also commented that the new characters that are being added into Duodecim (Such as Kain Highwind, and Lightning) will bring a fresh new experience to the story and to battle. Nomura also re-affirmed that every character in the game will have a third alternate uniform, as was spotted in the new open and closed theater trailers.

Moving on to the Assist System both Takahashi and Nomura consider it to be a drastic new addition to the battle system. They regard the Assist System to bring a whole new level of depth to the action game, and since the Assist System changes the flow of battle players will need to consider it in their battle strategy. Another reason is that the developers felt that the Assist System made the flow, pace, and aesthetics of battle a bit more lively than it’s predecessor.

On the appearance of Kain Highwind, Nomura said that he appears to be a fully-fledged soldier of Cosmos. Although players may be paranoid of his actions given his traitorous nature in Final Fantasy IV, this may not be the case in Duodecim. As for Lightning, Nomura commented that choosing characters for Duodecim wasn’t as cut-and-dry as the first game, as some characters may have conflicting motives and reasoning. When choosing characters for Duodecim the team took feedback from fans, but also considered different types of characters that could bring unique abilities to battle.

Regarding one of Lightning’s alternate outfits in which she appears in Aya Brea’s close from another PSP title called The 3rd Birthday, Nomura said that the collaboration between teams for these projects led to the decision for the inclusion of these outfits (including Cloud Strife’s Kingdom Hearts outfit). These outfits will not be the 3P outfit, but a fourth outfit for the two characters. This also explains the Amano-esque outfit Cloud wore in the closed-theater Duodecim trailer. The two outfits for Lightning and Cloud are optional DLC if players should buy The 3rd Birthday and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep -Final Mix- respectively.

Wrapping up the interview, Nomura was asked about what players can expect in transition between Dissidia and Duodecim. He mentioned that he will be working on the title for a while yet, and that new characters will be revealed over the next several months (This includes the Fabula Nova Crystallis conference as well) and that we should please look forward to their respective announcements.
