FFXI/XIV back online Friday
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011In the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the coast of Japan and caused rampant infrastructure problems, Square-Enix announced a period of interruption for it’s to Final Fantasy MMORPGs. This Friday, March 25th, services will resume according to an official update on The Lodestone. Sacrificing air conditioning and light (as someone who worked in an office setting this can be quite a big chunk of energy), the company will be able to keep the servers online for customers. They also announced that players for both MMOs will not be charged a monthly fee for the April billing cycle.
FFXI version update delayed until May
Wednesday, March 16th, 2011Unsurprisingly after the announcement that Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV’s servers would be temporarily shut down due to the unfolding events in Japan, the Final Fantasy XI team will be delaying their newest version update (originally scheduled to launch in the middle of next month) to Final Fantasy XI. Having to conserve electricity and bandwidth, as well as dealing with transportation woes for employees is a likely and understandable reason for the delay. Square-Enix’s plans to merge some servers will also be put on hold until further notice.
Server shut-off for FFXI/XIV
Sunday, March 13th, 2011In reaction to the recent events that have crippled Japan’s infrastructure in the past few days, Square-Enix updated The Lodestone with a message to fans of Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV. In order to conserve limited resources like bandwidth and electricity, the servers will go offline until further notice. Other online services in Japan such as Metal Gear Online have stopped services for this very reason. Square-Enix in and of itself has weathered the disaster; they are located in Shibuya in Tokyo and aside from a lot of shaking, the main office of the company is intact. We have not heard from Square-Enix Osaka, but that office is located further from the epicenter of the earthquake. Square-Enix has cancelled their merchandise events until further notice.
An exerpt from the official statement made by Square-Enix:
“We are now analyzing the situation and studying very hard what we can do to fulfill our social responsibilities under the unusual circumstances, and to mitigate the inconvenience to our players. According to our best estimate at this point, we will temporarily have to shut down the servers shortly. We will give you as much advance notice as possible under the rapidly changing circumstances.”
If you would like to help out with disaster relief, you can visit the American Red Cross to find out how to help.
Update: Square-Enix updated their Members’ Twitter today to inform that the Square Enix Members Japan website server will remain up as it is a social media site and may help to determine if a person is alright by their activity timestamps.
Jump shows off FFXI’s Prishe in Duodecim
Tuesday, February 1st, 2011In the newest trailer for Dissidia 012: Final Fantasy, we got a quick glimpse of Final Fantasy XI‘s Prishe being revealed for the first time. Today, Shonen Jump has her debut report. Seen in the scan linked below, Prishe will be voiced by Aya Hirano and use a combination of fisticuffs and white magic. Dissidia 012: Final Fantasy will release in Japan on March 3rd, and on March 22nd in North America for $29.99.
Update: It also appears that Jump will feature a product code for an alternate costume for Squall Leonhart in an issue later this month.
More DLC costumes possible for Duodecim
Sunday, January 30th, 2011In a recent interview with Dissidia 012: Final Fantasy‘s director Mutsunori Takahashi conducted by Famitsu, he comments that additional costumes for every character may eventually come in the form of DLC and that they are trying to deliver as much content as possible. There was no mention of new character announcements. On a side note, the team did consider Kam’lanaut and Eald’narche when choosing a new representative from Final Fantasy XI instead of Prishe. In the next few weeks before the release, we will likely be seeing new information on how she works as a character.

FFXIV players get extended discount for XI
Monday, November 29th, 2010Since before the launch of Final Fantasy XIV on September 30th, Square-Enix offered players of Final Fantasy XI a discount on their recurring monthly service charge should they also subscribe to Final Fantasy XIV. Today, Square-Enix has extended the discounts (which were originally set to expire in January of next year) to March 2011. Simultaneous dwellers of Vana’diel and Eorzea pay only $7.00USD/mo. for FFXI’s monthly fee (which also scales based on how many characters you have) instead of the usual $12.95USD.
