Square Enix has provided brand-new screenshots of Final Fantasy X-2 HD, set to release alongside Final Fantasy X HD this year on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. The team has added new 3D character models that have allowed for more expressive facial animations, painstakingly redrawn the game’s pre-rendered backgrounds, and upped the resolution of the CG movies including Final Fantasy X-2′s opening.

Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD will be on one Blu-ray disc for PlayStation 3, but the PlayStation Vita versions will be sold separately. The game will include the International content from their subsequent re-releases in Japan, but content like Last Mission and Eternal Calm has yet to be decided.

How does Final Fantasy X-2 HD stack up against its predecessor and the original Final Fantasy X-2? Leave us a comment with your thoughts below!

Retailer Reveals FFX/X-2 HD Int’l Content

Monday, May 6th, 2013

Retailer Best Buy Canada recently put up a listing for Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD on its website and included some interesting details as to what’s included. Previously, Yoshinori Kitase hinted that the team would work hard to include all of the International content like “Last Mission” from Final Fantasy X-2 in the release, and it looks like that may be happening after all. Via the listing here:

“Contains content not previously released in North America, including the optional superboss “Penance,” the “Eternal Calm” video that bridges the gap between the two titles, the “Last Mission” dungeon with 20+ hours of battle and story, and bonus dresspheres and garment grids”

Also included will be the “Eternal Calm” trailer that was released with the International version of Final Fantasy X to tease a sequel; this video takes place after the conclusion of the first game. Extra content like Garment Grids and Dresspheres such as the Psychicer and Festivalgoer will be included from the International release.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD will release in Japan and abroad this year for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. The PS3 version will include both games on one Blu-ray while the Vita versions will be sold separately. With all of the International content included, it appears North American fans will be treated to the most definitive version of these two PlayStation 2 classics yet.

Update: Best Buy Canada has removed the information about Last Mission from their product listing. In this week’s Famitsu, a blurb about Last Mission states that it’s inclusion is not yet decided. You can view that here.

Lightning Returns Update with Staff

Monday, April 29th, 2013

The Dead Dunes are one of four regions of Nova Chrysalia.

French Final Fantasy fansite FFDream recently sent an envoy to Square Enix’s Japan headquarters to meet with Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy director Motomu Toriyama and producer Yoshinori Kitase. Previously, it was revealed that the Coliseum would return in some form, and now their full interview is available to read. We’ve provided a translation below, but you can read the original report here.

When asked why the team chose Lightning as the singular playable heroine to this title, Kitase commented that they wanted players to understand and appreciate this character — and that’s why the game is dedicated to Lightning. Up until now (with the exception of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII) Final Fantasy games have been designed around several combatants, so they will try to provide enough strategy to compensate for a solo character.

Toriyama re-iterated that this will be the last chapter in the Final Fantasy XIII series; a definitive ending will come, as opposed to Final Fantasy XIII-2′s cliffhanger. Since players will have thirteen days left before the end of the world, the team’s goal is to acclimate them to the vastly changed remnant of Pulse and Cocoon called Nova Chrysalia. You’ll need to find a balance between exploration, and keeping an eye on the clock as Doomsday nears. However, the team assures us that the world will be worth exploring in subsequent play-throughs. The Coliseum will return in some form, but we’re told that it will be different than it’s appearance in Final Fantasy XIII-2.

In Final Fantasy XIII-2, there were several paradox endings in addition to the “main ending”. The script of Lightning Returns was designed around this main ending, but the events that occur in the paradox endings may manifest in Lightning Returns.

Composer Masashi Hamauzu, who created the original “Blinded by Light” theme for the Final Fantasy XIII series returns in this game as well. New arrangements of that theme have been created around the idea that this is the final journey of Lightning and the desire to save the world.

Kitase and Toriyama were also asked about any developments with Final Fantasy Versus XIII and a Final Fantasy Type-0 localization, but responded that since they are not on the team working on those games, they could not comment. When asked about other HD remakes or the possibility of a Final Fantasy VII remake, Kitase responded that through working on Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD, it will give them experience for other attempts. He implies there are currently no plans for a remake. The team also hasn’t made a decision on a Collector’s Edition for Final Fantasy X|X-2, but asked for fans to be patient for more information.

Final Fantasy X-2 HD’s Debut In Jump

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

Along with its predecessor Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2 is getting the full remaster treatment for PlayStation 3 and PSVita. Announced earlier this year in Japan, the two games will be coming to North America and Europe this year. They’ll include the International content as detailed in our write-up here — however, it’s unclear if the Last Mission that came with Final Fantasy X-2 International in Japan will be included. This also goes for Eternal Calm, a promotional video that bridges the two games and was released as a prelude to Final Fantasy X-2′s announcement over a decade ago.

This hasn’t stopped some eagle-eyed fans from taking it upon themselves to spread the word about these features, in hopes that Square Enix will confirm their inclusion or to get them added if they aren’t. Dubbed Operation Full Throttle, the group plans to use social media to get the word out. You can find out more by following them on Twitter here or on Facebook here.

Still More Surfing: Imeruat’s Giant

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

If you’re a fan of the music in Final Fantasy X, SaGa Frontier 2 or any Final Fantasy XIII title, you’re more than likely familiar with composer Masashi Hamauzu‘s impressionist style. A departure from Nobuo Uematsu’s melodic (almost songwriting) approach to composing for Final Fantasy, Hamauzu employs the piano and strings to great efficacy — evoking ambient joy, tension, or adventure in the games’ locales. Mina, seen performing in the video above, has a voice that permeates Final Fantasy XIII’s soundtrack in songs such as “Will to Fight“.

Their collaborative, IMERUAT, brings other Square Enix talent into the fold such as composer/arranger Mitsuto Suzuki — also known for his work on the Final Fantasy XIII series and The 3rd Birthday. The music video we feature today called “Giant” is from their first music video DVD out on April 24th. No doubt fans of Final Fantasy XIII will be able to see the musical similarities.

For more information on IMERUAT, you can click here. If you want to sample more of IMERAUT’s “Black Ocean” (which includes “Giant”), it’s available here at Wayô Records. You can also purchase the album here.

FFX/X-2 HD Split For Vita, 70% Complete

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

tidusyuna

With the recent announcement of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2′s HD Remaster treatment, Square Enix will be bringing both games to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Though the games will be on one Blu-ray for PS3, the company commented that the Vita’s cartridge size was a contributing factor in the decision to split them up for the Sony handheld. This comes via a new interview in Famitsu with producer Yoshinori Kitase and associate producer Hideki Imaizumi, out today.

Why is this? Well, the games themselves have remastered assets like character models (which include enemies) and environments, though those are usually less of a space hog than other elements. The cinematic sequences have been updated for an HD format, and as you can imagine, take up a considerably bigger file size since they are likely uncompressed. While not confirmed by Famitsu, remastered audio (lossless and uncompressed), also takes up a considerable amount of space.

If you’ve ever wondered why Final Fantasy XIII is three discs on Xbox 360, it’s largely due to the uncompressed cinematics and audio quality being a a bit too hefty for one DVD. (Blu-ray discs having more storage capacity.) Final Fantasy XIII-2 had cinematics that bookended the game as opposed to being liberally peppered throughout it’s length, so it comfortably fit on one disc.

Mr. Nomura, who is participating in the project, was quoted as saying: “Ok, let’s do it!” In regards to save data being shared between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, the team is currently researching the possibility of its inclusion.

Square Enix also confirmed that progress on Final Fantasy X HD has reached 70%.

Update: Final Fantasy World further translated that Tetsuya Nomura was talking with Final Fantasy Type-0 voice actors during the time of recording about their memories of Final Fantasy X as two games shared some voice actors like Mayuko Aoki (Yuna). It’s here, Famitsu says, that Square Enix got the ambition to do a HD remastering of the games.

This was all around 2011 when production on Final Fantasy XIII-2 was in full swing, so it took some extra time to shift the manpower to this project. Final Fantasy X producer Yoshinori Kitase said that since they’ve missed the 10th Anniversary of Final Fantasy X with this project, they’ll try to honor the 10th Anniversary of Final Fantasy X-2 by getting the game out this year.

Kitase also divulged that the team had difficulty taking the assets from the original game for the re-release, stating that one programmer was responsible for salvaging most of the data — but an outsourced team was called in to help on the project. The Visual Works team, specifically Kazuyuki Ikomori, was also called in to give the game’s cinematics a proper facelift for the HD generation.

Closing the interview, Kitase said he hopes that younger Final Fantasy and video game fans will be able to enjoy Final Fantasy X.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Announcement Trailer

Monday, March 25th, 2013

Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 will see new life on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, thanks to a new set of HD remasters that will make their way to North American shores this year. Re-releasing for the HD generation, these games will feature updated character models and assets, as well as the International content that remained Japan-exclusive until now.

The PlayStation 3 version will include both games on one Blu-ray disc, while the PlayStation Vita versions will be sold separately. Every version will support the trophy system on the PlayStation Network, so be prepared to hunker down and spend some quality time with each title.

For the debut announcement from producer Yoshinori Kitase, as well as some screenshots from the game, click here. For a look at the International content that will be included in these releases, check out my write-up here.

The International Content of FFX/X-2 HD

Saturday, March 23rd, 2013

lastmission

If you’re a North American fan of Final Fantasy, you’re likely aware of the widely-bemoaned “International” versions of Final Fantasy games. It turns out these Japan-only re-releases are anything but International as they include extra content overseas fans miss out on, dating as far back as Final Fantasy VII. In the case of Final Fantasy X, Europe was fortunate to have the extra content included on disc.

With the advent of Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD, North American fans have a chance to finally put their mastery of these games to the test on some of the extra challenges they have to offer. You may have had a peek at this stuff on YouTube (or through… less official methods) in the ten plus years that have elapsed, but we feel a refresher course for the International content is certainly due ahead of this year’s release.
