Final Fantasy VIII PC Gets Japan Release

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

FF8

In addition to Final Fantasy VII International (May 16th), Final Fantasy VIII will be released in Japan for PC. Like Final Fantasy VII, the game was originally ported to PC by Eidos in the late 90s. This week’s Famitsu provided the scoop, and announcement is expected at some point for North American and European release.

Earlier this year Final Fantasy VII PC was released worldwide through Square Enix’s online store, but originally, rumblings of a Steam release for both titles were hinted. The re-release featured a cloud saving, which also displayed stats on a website where players could effectively “boost” their HP, MP, and Gil to maximum for those looking to enjoy the story. For those looking for a challenge, Square Enix included a healthy amount of achievements.

Final Fantasy VIII fans and PC enthusiasts, what are your thoughts about a forthcoming release? Leave us your thoughts in a comment below!

Chronicles of Artnia: FFVIII Artwork Exhibit

Friday, April 12th, 2013

finalfantasyviii

Set in front of Square Enix’s office in Shinjuku, the Artnia café is themed around the company’s many video game franchises including Final Fantasy. A premiere dining destination for Japanese fans and those lucky enough to travel abroad, the menu includes moogle-stamped flapjacks, and an assortment of Final Fantasy-themed sundaes and cocktails.

Artnia doesn’t only serve your stomach, but your desire to see some rare pieces of Final Fantasy paraphernalia up close.

Starting yesterday and continuing through the 24th of this month, Artnia is hosting an exhibit of Final Fantasy VIII artwork by Tetsuya Nomura. This includes character and monster design, as well as a few storyboards from the game’s many cinematics.

FF-Reunion writer Aibo visited Artnia yesterday, and brings us the spoils. This includes rare character concept artwork of Squall and Nomura’s drawings of Guardian Force Griever and arch villain time-sorceress Ultimecia.

Final Fantasy VII + VIII Steam-bound At Last?

Thursday, March 14th, 2013

Over a year ago, buzz began around a few stealthy updates to Steam that indicated a possible re-release of the PC versions of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII. Last year, Square Enix went ahead with Final Fantasy VII PC — but as an exclusive to its own eStore. Fast forward to today, where new updates to Steam including the EULA (End User License Agreement) for Final Fantasy VII have led some to believe that Steam-powered ports are still on their way.

Final Fantasy VIII is not exempt, as updates to its Steam registry include achievements were uncovered. The achievements pertain to collecting various Guardian Forces and SeeD Ranks — or completing sidequests and amassing Gil.

For discerning PC gamers and Final Fantasy enthusiasts, would you be more inclined to buy these games through a service like Steam or through Square Enix’s eShop? How does the inclusion of DRM (which came with Final Fantasy VII’s PC re-release) factor into your purchasing decisions? What new features of a PC re-release do you find the most interesting? What would you like to see Square Enix add for this type of release?

Leave your thoughts and speculation in our comments section below!

Brody of Brody’s Music recently uploaded this cover of “The Man With the Machine Gun” from Final Fantasy VIII — the theme that plays when the party has intermittent flashbacks of Laguna Loire and his exploits with Kiros Seagill and Ward Zabac. They serve an integral role in the story, used to uncover the nature of the succession of Sorceresses.

Brody wields three guitars in tandem in the following video, and for more music featuring Brody, you can visit his blog here. Alternatively, if you’d like to download a free copy of the following song, you can do so by visiting his blog here.
