Fifteen years ago…

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

Yesterday was a big day for Final Fantasy, what with the release of Final Fantasy XIII-2 on North American shores. But it was a big day in another way — with Final Fantasy VII turning fifteen years old. The series’ first 3D entry on the PlayStation rocketed the series and the genre to a worldwide popularity unseen before that time. It was a terrific landmark for the series as a whole, and we’d like to celebrate this anniversary by asking you to share with us your memories of Final Fantasy VII.

Final Fantasy VII was my second Final Fantasy game after FFVI (or III on the SNES as it was known then), and I remember anxiously waiting in line to pick it up as soon as it was shipped in to our local retailer at a mall twenty miles away from where I lived. It was right when school started, when the summer heat started to lose it’s intensity and the cool and crisp sunny days of autumn were on the horizon.

The car ride home seemed to last forever (and then some when you have a new game you’re anxiously awaiting to jump into), but as soon as we were home, my shoes were slapping on the basement stairs to a little makeshift family room we had with a cold and bare cement floor and some old dusty furniture not nice enough for the main floor. I already had my PlayStation set up, and it took mere seconds to destroy the plastic wrapping around the game, opening the multi-disc case, and placing Disc 1 into the PlayStation with a surgeon’s precision.

The days after were spent completely enthralled in the game, and I vividly remember waking myself up at five in the morning to play the game before I went off to school. Our cafeteria discussions were always filled with game talk, and for many months after we would discuss our different materia combinations, our fascination with the story, and our amazement of cinematics that you could play during!

What I thought I’d do is dig up an old interview with Squaresoft staff on Final Fantasy VII, just for nostalgia’s sake. So in addition to that, please share your memories in the comments below!

Still More Surfing: Cease & Desist Edition

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

I think we’ll let this video speak for itself.

The site associated with the project can be found here with a gallery and “Making of” page. What would you think about a Final Fantasy in first-person view? I definitely felt a Deus Ex vibe!

Have a unique or interesting Final Fantasy-related video or project you’d like to share with the world? We’d like to start a segment where we turn the spotlight on content our readers (or the fandom in general) have created or spied around the internets.

To send in your suggestions to have content featured, contact me through our Staff page! To kick things off, here’s an interesting remix of “Still More Fighting” from Final Fantasy VII by YouTube user carlocastellano.

This is not for playing…

While we’re just about to get into the swing of Tokyo Game Show, I thought I’d bring up an old video from the Tokyo Game Show 2003. Today also marks the 6th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children‘s release in Japan and the 8th anniversary of the announcement. What are your feelings looking back on the project after all this time? How did you react when you first saw this footage? Leave a comment below!

Final Fantasy VII started on the SNES

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Final Fantasy super producer Yoshinori Kitase is interviewed in this week’s Dengeki PlayStation, and one of the topics discussed was the original plans for Final Fantasy VII. Apparently the game was originally slated for the Super Famicom (SNES), but since Squaresoft’s production department needed to finish Chrono Trigger, development shifted to the PlayStation. The following images are not from this week’s Dengeki, but old scans from an older publication (and I stress old) which featured screenshots of the prototype Final Fantasy VII. You can view them below:

As a prototype, it’s apparent that a lot of assets were used from previous games (as the FFXIII prototype used FFX-2 assets) and it looks like somewhat of a hybrid of Final Fantasy V and VI. What you see below was likely scrapped as the developers were working with a brand new system.

Update:
According to commenter KOKO, the following screenshots are speculative mock-ups created by a publication, and are not actual prototype screenshots! Since I can not verify if they are I’ll just put up this disclaimer. :)

FFVII Little Big Planet DLC sees the light of day

Monday, July 4th, 2011

It’s been several years since we were teased with a Final Fantasy VII-themed sackboy Sephiroth for the build-your-own-game game Little Big Planet. However, the project seemed to have gone silent for quite some time. Today on the European PlayStation Blog, an announcement that several Final Fantasy VII characters (they were vague on how many but we can assume at least the ones that are pictured) will be available on the North American and European PlayStation Network on July 13th.

Update: Cloud, Sephiroth, Aerith, and Tifa will be available for $1.99/ea. Get the $5.99 costume pack and you’ll get an extra Vincent sackboy with it!

FFVII & FFVIII found in Steam registry

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Interesting details about the PC versions of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII were dug up by RPGSite.net recently that indicate that Square-Enix was looking into having the games re-released on the Steam platform operated by Valve. The two PC versions originally ported by Eidos at the turn of the century have all of their files uploaded to the Steam network though it is reported that the Steam versions have been cancelled or at least halted due to problems with compatibility due to the new operating systems people use today.

Kitase interested in PSP remastering

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Final Fantasy super-producer Yoshinori Kitase commented briefly this week in this week’s Dengeki PlayStation that he is in fact interested in PSP remasterings of their products. We can only speculate that Final Fantasy Type-0 may be remastered for it’s upcoming summer release, but there is a library of Final Fantasy games on the PSP that may also be considered such as Dissidia and Duodecim as well as Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Remastered PSP games are buffed up to look nice on a HD screen, and popular Japanese franchises such as Metal Gear Solid and Monster Hunter are leading the way into the new series.

Two titles specifically mentioned in the article by Motomu Toriyama include Dissidia and Crisis Core, however in regards to the official status, the director only stated they were still a “blank slate”, which likely means final decisions have not been made yet.

It is very important that you chime in! What Final Fantasy PSP titles would you like to see remastered for PS3? Let us know your opinions!

Hideo Kojima chats with SE about a VII remake

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

If you’ve been an ardent follower of Square-Enix news, then you know that Kojima having dinner dates with the staff at Square-Enix is nothing particularly new. In fact, we speculate that this have brought about the inception of Square-Enix producing Metal Gear Solid figures under it’s PlayArts brand, but only speculation. However, Mr. Kojima and his art director Yoji Shinkawa recently had dinner with president Yoichi Wada, director Tetsuya Nomura who is also known for his character artwork.

Kojima relayed that he passed along various messages by his Twitter followers to ask Square-Enix including a message for them “to remake Final Fantasy VII”. While we can’t imagine this would be something Square-Enix hasn’t thought about already at some length (and they’ve commented several times upon), Mr. Nomura said he “pass it along” to the rest of the staff.

Missing ‘Honeybee Inn’ scene revealed

Friday, May 6th, 2011

A very diligent cast of individuals got their hands on a first edition print of the Japanese release of Final Fantasy VII. Lo and behold there was a missing scene included within the game’s assets (accessible by using software to debug the game) that never made it into the final version. We see Cloud at the Honeybee Inn in Midgar, and he runs into ShinRa’s own Palmer, seemingly on “business”. Notably a song called “Comical” never made it to the game’s final soundtrack, and is heard in this scene.

Let’s hope that this doesn’t revive the ancient “there’s a way you can get Aeris back legit in Disc 3″ urban legend from long ago…
