The Final Fantasy Series in A Realm Reborn

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

No doubt if you caught the aptly-named Letter from the Producer Live VI, you would have seen Magitek armor units marching across the wastes of (what I assume is) Coerthas to the tune of “Terra’s Theme”. The tease that came at the beginning of the live letter with Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn producer Naoki Yoshida. The MMO reboot isn’t limited to Final Fantasy VI references, but will feature a Crystal Tower (Final Fantasy III) raid, a Gold Saucer (Final Fantasy VII) attraction some time after launch.

The pantheon of Final Fantasy summons also return as Primals, and we’ll be expecting to see more of their bestial faces pop up in the future. While Ifrit and Garuda were introduced in instanced fights in Version 1.0, expect to see the likes of Shiva, Odin, and more. Even classic Final Fantasy bosses like Gilgamesh are due for a cameo.

For those of you who enjoy the nostalgic references to the series past in A Realm Reborn, what cameos or features would you love to see and why? Does the inclusion of too many nostalgic references drown out the game’s identity as a new Final Fantasy? Leave us your thoughts in a comment below!

So You Think You Can Ride This Magitek?

Magitek are no laughing matter! I’m still healing up from the Battle of Carteneau (chronicled by yours truly here), and let me tell you: glowing purple energy burns are the pits. To lift my spirits, Team XIV’s Fernehalwes has posted a new entry on the game’s official developer blog.

Garlemald’s techonological might may be unmatched by the citizens of Eorzea, but in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, it seems that some cunning and grand theft magitek will definitely suffice. This player, seen in the images below, has procured a Magitek mount for himself — so with bit of pluck and persistence, you can too. Yoshi-P has given the green light on the in-game design, and Fernehalwes took one for a spin through the Black Shroud. I assume he’s up to his neck in Greenwrath by now.

The designs are based on Magitek armor units that appeared in Final Fantasy VI, and are used by the Gestahlian Empire to lay waste to resistance forces opposing occupation.

Hiroyuki Itou on Final Fantasy’s battle systems

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

For those unfamiliar with Hiroyuki Itou’s body of work when it comes to the Final Fantasy series, all you have to do is recall the Active Time Battle system that became a staple of the series for years. Evolving and spawning unique iterations of itself, we’ve come to associate it fondly with the Final Fantasy brand itself. Itou has been a longtime employee of Square, predating the series itself. The appropriately-named “Father of ATB” was involved in Final Fantasy IV, V, VI, Tactics, IX, and XII — treating each battle system as an evolution of his original idea.

In a new interview with 1up, he looks back on his creation:

1UP [Jeremy Parish]: The ATB changed a lot in Final Fantasy V. In Final Fantasy IV, there was a clock on every action, and the more complicated the action, the longer it took to execute, even after you selected the command.

Hiroyuki Itou: It was just a natural progression of the system. The system wasn’t yet complete, in my mind, during Final Fantasy IV. So after talking to the new team members and stuff, I felt that the system evolved the way it should.

1UP [Jeremy Parish]: Was there a point where you think ATB reached its optimal form? Where you said, “This is what it needs to be”?

Hiroyuki Itou: First of all, I feel like the “optimal” ATB has yet to come. I think it’s the advance of hardware, and stuff like memory within that… I always had to be concerned about things like that initially, when I started doing this kind of thing. It’s getting closer and closer to the optimum level where I can do exactly what I want to. It’s getting there, but we’re not actually there yet. Did you want to ask about the Gambit system?

Most Beautiful Seduction

Friday, June 15th, 2012

As seen on Super Nintendo Entertainment System soundfont affinity Tumblr SNESology, composer and violinist Jeff Ball uses the original Final Fantasy VI soundfont to create a new composition about the game’s protagonist: Terra Branford. Ball writes:

“This piece was created using instruments from Final Fantasy 6. It’s a journey into the mind of Terra, a dark and brittle look into her past.”

You can obtain a free copy of the song by visiting SNESology here.

Thank you to Mirby for today’s submission! If you’d like to feature Final Fantasy-themed videos on Final Fantasy Network, send me a tweet or an email!
