Matsuno comments on Level-5 projects
Thursday, June 30th, 2011From his Twitter, the father of Ivalice Yasumi Matsuno commented on his new role developing games with Level-5. He issued this statement, translated to English:
“To my English-speaking followers, some personal news: as you may have heard, I have joined game developer Level-5 Inc. I received an offer to work on a project, and when [Akihiro Hino] and I hit it off, it seemed like a natural fit for me to join. Unfortunately, I can’t talk details about any current projects. Apologies in advance if I can’t answer your questions… What I can say is that I don’t intend to work on anything too epic in scale for now. “Short stories,” not “novels,” with short dev. cycles. I hope to make games that aren’t targeted specifically for kids (or adults) but games that can be enjoyed by all ages. There will be an official announcement when we’re ready, so please wait for that, and heartfelt thanks for all your support!” – Yasumi Matsuno
Final Fantasy Tactics iPhone set for July
Thursday, June 30th, 2011Square-Enix North America representative Shiina took to Facebook today to let Final Fantasy Tactics fans know that the game has missed it’s projected Spring 2011 release but that at the end of July we can expect to see the game finally make it’s way to Apple’s iPhone. Shiina also answered a few questions about the port, which you can read below. Mark your calendars!
Q: Is the slow-down problem solved?
A: Yes! It’s definitely fatser, comfortable to play. We’ll show it in the trailer or a movie clip.
Q: Is it a universal app?
A: No. We’ll release iPhone ver and iPad ver both.
Q: When will you release the iPad version?
A: Now we plan to release it 1 month later than iPhone version.
Q: Supported 3GS?
A: Yes! Absolutely!
Q: 3G also supported?
A: No. We tried to support 3G but it was toooo slow to play the game.
Q: Does it have the Multiplayer mode.
A: Nope. We had to cut it off for iOS devices.
Q: Add-ons?
A: No. We don’t plan to release add-ons now.
Q: Did you add the autosave function?
A: Yes! Exactly! If you get a phone call, the game will be automatically saved and you can get back to the game immediately. Honestly…it took much time to add this function. It made the dev team exhausted.
Famitsu rumor: Matsuno leaves Square-Enix
Tuesday, June 28th, 2011This week’s issue of Famitsu cites that Square-Enix director and father of the Ivalice Alliance Final Fantasy games has left Square-Enix to work at Level 5. He has not been listed on any projects since the remake of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. Level 5 is known for JRPGs such as White Knight Chronicles, Rogue Galaxy, and the upcoming Ninokuni. Matsuno was supposedly asked to join by Akihiro Hino, Level 5′s CEO.
Keep in mind this is information that has not been confirmed.
Update: Yasumi Matsuno is working with Level-5 but since he is freelance like Hideo Minaba (Designation), Nobuo Uematsu (Smile, Please) and Kazushige Nojima (Stellavista), he doesn’t explicitly work on Square-Enix projects alone. (See: Mad World for Wii in which Matsuno has writing credits). This does not mean that Yasumi Matsuno will not work on projects at Square-Enix in the future. Interestingly enough, Matsuno comments on this twitter here that if given the chance, he would like to make a Final Fantasy Tactics 2 about the 50-Year War.

4gamer chats up Yasumi Matsuno
Wednesday, April 27th, 2011Recently completing the PSP remake of Tactics Ogre, Square-Enix director Yasumi “Yazmat” Matsuno may be known to Final Fantasy fans for directing Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII prior to a hiatus. Japanese game journo site 4gamer recently posted a new interview with the creator of Ivalice, in which he divulges some of his personal influences and style, as well as commenting on some of the pressures of directing a mainline Final Fantasy title. NeoGAF member “FINALFANTASYDOG” provides some translations of the new interview, which you can read by following the link below.
Of interest is his comments about the production of Final Fantasy XII. He likens working on a mainline Final Fantasy title as development that is very “democratic” in the sense that many members of the development team pitch ideas to each other, and then a general group consensus moves certain design decisions forward. There was also a pressure to deliver a AAA title that will sell for millions, which is something that Matsuno had not previously undertaken. He cites that development at Quest (the studio he worked at before Square aquired them in 2002 and after he, Hiroshi Minagawa, and Akihiko Yoshida had left for Square) was more of a “kind dictatorship” implying that development on games had a strong top-down decision making structure that was less open to feedback from developers lower on the food chain.
